Dress For Success

Have you ever gotten up one morning feeling groggy and just wanting to go back to sleep? (That's me basically every morning.) What about feeling like that and then dressing like a slob? Go ahead and admit it. Every single person is guilty of it. Even the people who dress nice 99.9 percent of the time have their off days. But maybe on the days you do feel like crawling back under your covers and hibernating for the rest of your life, consider pushing that feeling aside and dressing nicely for a change. You’ll feel more than a hundred times better. “When you look good, you feel good and you perform at a much higher level in your personal and professional life,” said image consultant Julie Zanes, founder of Instyle Image. Dressing nicely does not always mean dresses and heels for girls and suits and ties for guys; it’s different for everyone. Dressing nice is what you’re comfortable and confident in. Let's be honest here, if anyone says they're comfortable in heels and a suit, do not trust them. They have to be lying.

It has actually been proven that the better you dress (according to your style, of course), the better you feel. Dr. Alistair Tombs from the University of Queensland, who is the lead researcher of this topic, said, “We demand many things from clothing. Quite a few people [in his study] talked about using clothes to change their mood.” If the people that were included in his study felt bad, they would choose nice clothes to make themselves brighten up. Researchers have also found that women have a tendency to attach emotions to clothing items. Women then use the clothes that have positive emotions attached with them to boost their mood. “Clothes are almost like photographs: they bring back memories of a moment in your life,” said Dr. Tombs. So, a shirt you wore on a first date that went really well or a dress you wore when you received an award, would make you feel confident, whereas the clothes you wore during an embarrassing moment would make you feel bad. The same could happen for guys. They don’t want to wear a shirt that reminds them of their ex-girlfriend, when they got in serious trouble or when they were embarrassed.

So the next time you feel like throwing on a pair of sweats and not fixing your hair, stop and think how much you could benefit from just a few extra minutes spent on yourself in the morning. Put on the clothes that make you feel attractive and confident and flaunt them like you’re a runway model (Guys, you can be a runway model, too!).

Today I started my third week of college at Minnesota State Moorhead. I have survived welcome week, finding my classes on the first day, and being an awkward loner in the dining hall. Even though I have yet to be here for a month, I have already experienced many thoughts and problems that only a new college student can relate to.

"Make sure to get involved when you're in college!"

We've all heard some variation of this phrase, whether it came from parents, other family members, friends, RAs, or college-related articles. And, like many clichés, it's true for the most part. Getting involved during your college years can help you make friends, build your resume, and feel connected to your campus. However, these commitments can get stressful if you're dealing with personal issues, need to work, or aren't sure how to balance classes and everything else going on during the semester.

In college, one of the essential things to have is friends. Yes, textbooks, a laptop, and other school supplies are important but friends are essential. Friends are that support system everybody needs. The more friends you have the better the support system you have. But you also have someone to share experiences with. And don’t settle for just one or two friends because 8 out of 10 times they are busy and you are studying all alone. Or they have other friend groups that do not include you. Don’t settle for just one or two friends; make as many friends as you can. After the first couple of weeks of college, most friend groups are set and you may be without friends.

Finals week is upon us. It is a magical time of year during which college students everywhere flock to the library in attempt to learn a semester's worth of knowledge in only a week. For some students, it's their first time in the library all semester, maybe ever. Others have slaved away many nights under the fluorescent lights, and are slightly annoyed to find their study space being invaded by amateurs. While these newbies wander aimlessly around the first floor, hopelessly trying to find a table, the OGs of the library are already on the third floor long tables deep into their studies. Here is a few signs that you may live in the library, whether you'd like to admit it or not.
