NBC recently announced this past week that their next live musical production will be "Hairspray." Many people will be familiar with the musical from the movie adaptation in 2007 that starred newcomer Nikki Blonsky, Zac Efron, Queen Latifah, John Travolta and many more. As much as it would be amazing to have some of the star-studded cast to reprise their roles, it'll be even more awesome to have a brand new cast take on this classic Broadway hit. Although the show is a year away, here's who I would love to see in these iconic roles (which is where the term dream casting comes in).
Christian Borle as Corny Collins
Originally played by: James Marsden
Borle is the best choice for Corny Collins because he's got a great personality and his voice is perfect for "Nicest Kids in Town." His comedic timing is excellent and he can always guarantee a laugh (after winning a Tony Award for playing Black Stache in "Peter and the Starcatcher" and another for William Shakespeare in "Something Rotten!") just like Corny Collins character does.
Audra McDonald as Motormouth Maybelle
Originally played by: Queen Latifah
As incredible as Queen Latifah reprising her Maybelle role would be (imagine hearing her "I Know Where I've Been" live), the extremely talented Audra McDonald would certainly pull off this role as if it were nothing. She's won six Tony Awards! She also has the live musical experience already, playing Mother Abbess in NBC's "The Sound of Music Live!"
Kristin Chenoweth as Velma Von Tussle
Originally played by: Michelle Pfeiffer
I think a better question is, why hasn't Chenoweth been a part of one of NBC's live productions yet? But maybe Velma Von Tussle will be her chance. Couldn't you see her singing "The Legend of Miss. Baltimore Crabs?" She is equal parts sassy and charismatic much like Pfeiffer's playing of the character so she is the most obvious choice.
Jessica Keenan Wynnas Amber Von Tussle
Originally played by: Brittany Snow
Wynn has had her fair share of experience- she was once part of the ensemble of "Hairspray" at the Hollywood Bowl Stage. But she also knows how to play the mean girl perfectly as she was Heather Chandler in the off-Broadway hit "Heathers: The Musical."
Matthew Morrisonas Wilbur Turnblad
Originally played by: Christopher Walken
I'm not saying Walken's performance was bad necessarily (in the movie because in NBC's "Peter Pan Live" is a whole different story) but Morrison's superstar dance moves and voice are exactly what this role needs.
Christopher Sieber as Edna Turnblad
Originally played by: John Travolta
Who could forget Travolta dressing up in a fat suit to play one of Broadway's famous mothers? A man dressing in drag has become a tradition for this role and "Matilda the Musical's" Sieber is no stranger to that as he plays the evil Miss. Trunchbull!
Todrick Hallas Seaweed
Originally played by: Elijah Kelley
Kelley just portrayed Scarecrow in "The Wiz Live" and reminded us how great of a performer he is and what a perfect match he was for Seaweed! Who could step into his shoes? None other than Internet sensation Todrick Hall, who has already voiced his excitement on Twitter, Hall has the voice for the role and the dance moves to match, not to mention he has already played the role in a regional production.
Darren Crissas Link Larkin
Originally played by: Zac Efron
Would this not be perfect? Link Larkin is charming and heart-melting (causing Tracy to sing "I Can Hear the Bells" just by looking at him) and who better to play the heartthrob than "Glee's" Darren Criss? If the casting directors could take any idea from this dreamcast, I really hope it could be this. Make it happen, NBC.
Ariana Grande as Penny Pingleton
Originally played by: Amanda Bynes
Little known fact that Grande started on Broadway in the musical "13." Her voice is perfect for Broadway tunes and just imagine the harmonies in "Without Love"! It would also bring in her fan base for more viewership, which from a broadcasting standpoint is always important.
Someone unknown as Tracy Turnblad
Originally played by: Nikki Blonsky
As tradition goes, the girl who plays Tracy is usually someone unknown. Blonsky was working at a Cold Stone Creamery when she found out she landed the role and it led her to some more TV and movie roles. It'll be exciting to see who gets the iconic role!
