The highly anticipated fourth album of Toronto rapper, Drake, dropped recently and as I'm writing this just wow, this album sure as hell caused a storm on social media before it even came out. With Drake "Views" memes running rapid on Twitter and Instagram:
(Here's one that I made, enjoy)
So all memes aside, this album (originally Views from the 6), starts with an orchestra like production that fans have dubbed Mozart Boomin, that Drake uses to serenade the listeners before the metaphorical heat that seems to come afterwards. He follows up the slow and melodic Keep the Family Close with two uptempo tracks that the masses have dubbed two of the top 5 tracks of the album with 9, and U With Me?. With verses like "All these handouts man it's gettin' out of hand" in 9, you can see why people tended to say that Drake had a lot of corny bars in this album. That may be true but he saves himself plenty with wordplay in tracks like U With Me? and Weston Road Flows. While being involved with the multitude of Twitter users in the Views Twitter listening party, The favorite songs seemed to be both Redemption and Fire & Desire. Songs playing at the sensitive gimmick the 6 God tends to keep going back to in his music. While I could agree, I think my favorite song on this album is still up in the air. There are 20 songs of Drake and his "cruising" like verses and production that it would be hard to determine. The closest to being a favorite would have to be Faithful ft Pimp C, but I'd have to listen and digest just a little bit longer. So to counter, my least favorite tracks on this album are Hype and Still Here. Those two for me are extremely forgettable and lack the continuity that the rest of the album portrays. This album lacks mega star power, but you could say that Drake is the main event and didn't want to be upstaged. I felt like keeping The Throne, Kanye West, and Jay-Z, or adding The Weeknd to one of the slower and singing songs could've have made a C+ song a B+, but that's just nitpicking from me.
All in all the album Views is going to give us something to listen to from Drake going into Summer 16' until he drops more music as hinted to in his OVO Sound Radio interview. So as of right now my honest rating for Drake's Views is 7.9/10
Drake lacks the superstar features that he tends to rely on these days in songs that could've used them. Some of the continuity is wonky but if he replaced a couple songs it would flow a lot smoother. All in all, it was exactly what I thought a Drake album would be, it's no Take Care, but it will do.
