My brother and I are huge fans of Drake, so when he announced a tour the same summer of my brother’s high school graduation and nineteenth birthday, I knew we needed to go. As fate would have it, my friend who was bought tickets wasn’t going anymore and sold her tickets to me. I bought the tickets for my brother as a birthday/graduation gift and we counted down the days till we’d see the 6 God live.
The week leading up to the concert, my brother and I texted every day about how excited we were to for the concert. The day finally arrived and we got there super early to make sure we wouldn’t hit traffic. We got there and the original tickets said it began at 7pm, an updated email said it was 6:30pm, so we got in line around 6:30 to get there well into the opening act (so we thought). We joined some friends in the huge line to get in and as soon as we did, it POURED rain on us. Everyone in line was soaked and it was a mess. But did we continue to wait in that line and going inside for the concert soaking wet? Hell yes, we did! I’d honestly have trenched through snow for Drake.
So we get in there and get in our seats. The 7, 6:30 confusion was settled when the opening act didn’t begin till 7:30. The two opening acts were okay, but it just built up the hype to see Drake. Finally, around 9:30pm, Drake came out. He opened with Summer Sixteen and the curtain dropped revealing him and fireworks. I honestly got choked up. My brother and I love Drake and Philadelphia, so when Drizzy made his appearance in an Allen Iverson jersey, you can imagine our excitement. The show was amazing. Drake kept it high energy and played all of his hits. Crazy effects like fireworks and color changing lights shaped like balls made the show insanely good.
Drake brought out Future during Grammys and Future appeared from a rising platform in the stage. He did a set including effects like a fire that I could feel the heat from. The two stars blew me away and just when I thought my little Drake-obsessed heart couldn’t take anymore, turns out I can. During HYFR, Drake gets to the part where Lil Wayne is featured. All of a sudden, we realized Lil Wayne’s part is live and Weezy is surprising us on stage! My brother and I were so excited, screaming, dancing, and singing along. My favorite part of the concert was easily when Drake performed his hit diss track "Back to Back." I saw Drake in Philly; the hometown of Meek Mill, whom "Back to Back" is about. The whole arena was screaming and singing along (I’m diehard Team Drake in the Drake/Meek beef). I lost my voice and part of my sanity and fangirled the whole time. It was amazing.
Drake was the best $400 I’ve ever spent and if you’re on the fence about seeing Drake live, splurge and go. You will have the time of your life and you won’t be disappointed. Even though the night started out with some drizzle, Drizzy made it better but giving an unforgettable performance.
