Heartbreak Drake got me with “November 18th” and took me through “The Motion” of what it means to truly have a deep connection with an artist’s music. I can remember the first time I heard “Fear” on So Far Gone, he goes “because spending time is hopeless/and know I pop bottles ‘cause I bottle my emotions/at least I put it all in the open”; those lyrics spoke volumes because its real — we’ve all been there at some point, obviously handling it in our own way. I can listen to Drake’s music during any occasion, whether it be chillin’ alone in my zone or feeling myself in the function with my people. I feel connected with how comfortable he is with being vulnerable; that’s what it’s all about honestly, being real and being you — those are qualities of a great artist.
Drake is always included in my daily rotation of music somehow. So, in no particular order, allow me to put you on to some of my favorite Drake songs.
1. Cameras/Good Ones Go Interlude
The beginning of the track gets me every time, the monotone voice that Drake uses along with the sample of Jon B’s “Calling On You” is amazing, it’s so soothing.
2. Dreams Money Can Buy
Such an underrated song that still resonates after all these years. The constant “don’t f*ck with me, don’t f*ck with me” has forever been my mood.
3. Look What You’ve Done
I always find myself reminiscing about the growth I’ve made and all the memories that shaped me into the person I am today. Just as Drake recounts his times with his Grandmother, she always believed in him “you said either way I’ll be a star, I could go so far/talked to me, you got to me”.
4. Bria’s Interlude
Takes me back to the good old days in 2009. Man, this song will forever be smooth.
5. Fear
The metaphors, the flow, the vibe and melody, everything…this is a classic.
