How Donald Trump is putting his own monsters in the swamp

Drain The What?

We heard Donald Trump talk for over a year about his wonderful fortune he has. Well, we hear about it. He hasn't released his tax returns, but we hear. Because of this fortune, he proudly bragged about how he wouldn't be beholden to big money donors, he was an outsider, and he was going to "drain the swamp." How's that working out?

The swamp is nowhere near drained, in fact, I think it got bigger. Politico wrote an extraordinary piece on the role that Donald Trump's donors are having within his administration. A little of a third of the 200 people who have seen Donald Trump since his election victory to interview for administration jobs have been big money donors. The 73 donors contributed $1.7 million towards Trump and $57.3 million to the rest of the party.

These donors got extremely rewarded for their efforts in unprecedented ways. Normally, donors get easy diplomatic jobs with no real importance or heavy lifting. Trump, on the other hand, has provided his donors with some top level positions. For example, Trump's Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin personally gave Trump $425,000 and helped him raise the rest of his money as his finance chairman.

The crazy thing about this isn't the fact that Trump is doing it, but that some of his supporters really don't seem to care. I and a lot of other people knew Trump was a charlatan, but his voters actually voted for his campaign slogan of "drain the swamp."

Fifty-seven-year-old Mark Ross from Pennsylvania said, "better Trump's swamp than Obama's swamp. At least he's gonna get us something." "If Hillary had won – and you know, she really is a swamp person – she would have had to pay back with favors all these interests that sent her money." As opposed to Trump that wouldn't have to pay back favors? He's doing that right now.

This is a problem in American politics. You're a cheerleader for your side and don't hold the people you voted for accountable. Believe me, this isn't just a Trump phenomena either. Plenty of liberals will make excuses for their favorite politician at the time.

Just because there is an R instead of a D next to the name, or vice versa, doesn't mean that giving powerful and important cabinet positions to your donors is ok. If Bernie Sanders won the presidency and he appointed people from Wal-Street and big pharmaceutical companies I'd be pissed and speak out.

I'm pleading with Trump supporters. Hold him accountable for his actions; you're the only ones who really can at this point. If he's doing something that you would hate if Barack Obama was doing it, you should hate it when he's doing it too.

As college students, we are all familiar with the horror show that is course registration week. Whether you are an incoming freshman or selecting classes for your last semester, I am certain that you can relate to how traumatic this can be.

1. When course schedules are released and you have a conflict between two required classes.

Raising the minimum wage to a livable wage would not only benefit workers and their families, it would also have positive impacts on the economy and society. Studies have shown that by increasing the minimum wage, poverty and inequality can be reduced by enabling workers to meet their basic needs and reducing income disparities.

I come from a low-income family. A family, like many others in the United States, which has lived paycheck to paycheck. My family and other families in my community have been trying to make ends meet by living on the minimum wage. We are proof that it doesn't work.

April Ludgate

Every college student knows and understands the struggle of forcing themselves to continue to care about school. Between the piles of homework, the hours of studying and the painfully long lectures, the desire to dropout is something that is constantly weighing on each and every one of us, but the glimmer of hope at the end of the tunnel helps to keep us motivated. While we are somehow managing to stay enrolled and (semi) alert, that does not mean that our inner-demons aren't telling us otherwise, and who is better to explain inner-demons than the beloved April Ludgate herself? Because of her dark-spirit and lack of filter, April has successfully been able to describe the emotional roller-coaster that is college on at least 13 different occasions and here they are.
