5 Dr. Seuss Quotes To Hold Dear
Theodore Geisel

Dr. Seuss has entertained and appealed to children since 1937, and his words and lessons still resonate with children and adults alike, and perhaps carries extra weight for today's society. Dr. Seuss's words were simple, and sometimes made-up, but they always meant something. As I grow up, I see how much those words really mean, and how much we need them in bad times. Here are a few quotes that really bring light to the world and smiles to faces:

1. "You have brains in your head, you have feet in your shoes, you can steer yourself any direction you choose."

This quote is a good reminder that you, you yourself, are in charge of your own destiny, and as long as you know what you want and guide yourself along the best path for you, you can do anything.

2. "Unless someone like you cares a whole awful lot, nothing is going to get better. It's not!"

This quote from "The Lorax" is perhaps the most important Dr. Seuss quote, in my opinion, and applies a lot to many environmental, political, and social issues in today's time. When I gave my niece a copy of "The Lorax" when she was born, I emphasized in a personal note that she can change the world if she cares enough. I believe that applies to anyone. If you care, you can make a change.

3. "Step with care and great tact, and remember that Life's a Great Balancing Act."

It's rather important to remember that there are different parts of your life, some good, some bad. It's important to balance everything in your life so that you can enjoy the good parts of it and change the parts you don't like.

4. "It is better to know how to learn than to know."

Learning about something, becoming more educated about it, and then making a stance, whether than just assuming that you know, is one of the most important things you could ever do. In both mine and Dr. Seuss's opinions, learning is probably the best thing a person can do with him -- or her -- self.

5. "You won't lag behind, because you'll have the speed. You'll pass the whole gang and you'll soon take the lead. Wherever you fly, you'll be best of the best. Wherever you go, you will top all the rest. Except when you don't. Because, sometimes, you won't."

It's important to know that sometimes, you will fail. And that's OK. What's important to know and to hold onto when you do fail, is that you won't always fail. There will be times that you succeed and do wonderful things. During those times, you just have to remember to stay humble. Life's a roller coaster; it won't always go up. Likewise, it won't always go down.

These quotes are important to remember and hold dear because they speak wonders and hold deep truths. During times of trouble, or even times of happiness, it's never a bad idea to turn to a Dr. Seuss book or quote. They do always say, after all, when you're down, see a doctor.

New year, new semester, not the same old thing. This semester will be a semester to redeem all the mistakes made in the previous five months.

1. I will wake up (sorta) on time for class.

Let's face it, last semester you woke up with enough time to brush your teeth and get to class and even then you were about 10 minutes late and rollin' in with some pretty unfortunate bed head. This semester we will set our alarms, wake up with time to get ready, and get to class on time!

And so it begins.

1. Walk in motivated and ready to rock

Camping out at the library is not for the faint of heart. You need to go in as a warrior. You usually have brought supplies (laptop, chargers, and textbooks) and sustenance (water, snacks, and blanket/sweatpants) since the battle will be for an undetermined length of time. Perhaps it is one assignment or perhaps it's four. You are motivated and prepared; you don’t doubt the assignment(s) will take time, but you know it couldn’t be that long.

December... it's full of finals, due dates, Mariah Carey, and the holidays. It's the worst time of the year, but the best because after finals, you get to not think about classes for a month and catch up on all the sleep you lost throughout the semester. But what's worse than finals week is the last week of classes, when all the due dates you've put off can no longer be put off anymore.
