(ATTENTION: If you have not heard the song "Forest" by Twenty One Pilots go watch this video to experience the magic.)
As I pull my left leg into the car and shut the door, I open up Pandora and turn on my Twenty One Pilots radio. Just like every other morning. Today is different though. Today, the division in our nation is more evident than ever. Today, people cry, people argue, people scream, people protest, people hate. Today, we are not okay.
The first song begins to play. Forest, by Twenty One Pilots. The opening notes float through my car, entering in my left ear, buzzing around in my brain, and exiting through my right ear, leaving behind a jumble or inspired thoughts. Musings, if you will.
For the past week, or really for the past six months, all I have seen is opposition. I see opposition in school, at work, in my family and friends. It’s almost never caused by anything important. People are divided by things as simple as outward appearances, socioeconomic statuses, and even petty arguments.
As I sing along to the song, I am reminded that we should all be thankful for one another. Rather than judging and fighting, we should be making compromises and giving each other compassion. We should cast aside this idea of division between races and classes and all join hands to make tomorrow better, not only for ourselves, but for our future generations.
I urge you all to fight the opposition that we are seeing today. Be kind to your neighbor. Hold the door open for a stranger. Strike up a conversation with someone who looks lonely or sad. Love everyone. This is not the time to continue preaching a divisive rhetoric. Now is the time to remember that we are all members of the human race and that we all deserve love.
