20 life tips I've learned over the years.

A few months back, I began compiling a list of life tips that I have learned over the years. I took these tips and posted them on my twitter with the handle #DougAdvice. (It's only a matter of time until it takes off, trust me) Some of these lessons I have even expanded upon in some of my previous pieces.

This is a variety of lessons ranging from moronically simple to exceptionally insightful, but they all have one thing in common. They are all completely valid tips that can be quite eye opening. So now, I share with you everything I have learned in my life up to this point. Well, maybe not everything.

1. They say distance can be good, but it can also be bad.

2. Sometimes, when you think you've found the one, maybe you didn't.

3. If you don't have the courage to go talk to the person that you like, honestly, you aren't alone.

4. The apple doesn't fall far from the tree. Unless, or course, the tree is on a hill and the apple rolls when it lands.

5. Just do it... Or don't. You are your own person and can make your own decisions.

6. You don'f know for sure until you know, for sure.

7. When in doubt, you should probably do something to reassure yourself. Seriously, doubt can become a serious issue in your life.

8. It you never say anything, you can't get in trouble, right?

9. Just get the ball to the hole. Unless it's the wrong hole, in which case get it to a different hole.

10. Although alcohol may seem like a viable option, it's probably not the best answer.

11. There's no need for over the top displays of affection. In reality, it's the little things that matter.

12. It doesn't matter how fast you finish something. Make sure it's done to the best of your abilities. You'll get further in life that way.

13. Never be late, and don't even be on time. To be early is to be on time.

14. Stuff happens, and even if there isn't a reason, it doesn't matter. All that matters is how you react to, learn from, and move on from the experience.

15. It is what it is.

16. Life is like a multiple choice test. Unfortunately, it's one of those cruel tests where none of the answers are actually wrong.

17. Don't be afraid to fall in love for fear of getting hurt. The right "doctor" can fix a broken heart.

18. You don't need a lot of friends, just a few close friends that are there for you enough to be able to insult you on a daily basis just for the sake of fun.

19. If a simple dance could last a lifetime, oh what a life that would be.

20. Life should be about making lasting memories, but also the could haves and what ifs that keep us thinking.

Today I started my third week of college at Minnesota State Moorhead. I have survived welcome week, finding my classes on the first day, and being an awkward loner in the dining hall. Even though I have yet to be here for a month, I have already experienced many thoughts and problems that only a new college student can relate to.

"Make sure to get involved when you're in college!"

We've all heard some variation of this phrase, whether it came from parents, other family members, friends, RAs, or college-related articles. And, like many clichés, it's true for the most part. Getting involved during your college years can help you make friends, build your resume, and feel connected to your campus. However, these commitments can get stressful if you're dealing with personal issues, need to work, or aren't sure how to balance classes and everything else going on during the semester.

In college, one of the essential things to have is friends. Yes, textbooks, a laptop, and other school supplies are important but friends are essential. Friends are that support system everybody needs. The more friends you have the better the support system you have. But you also have someone to share experiences with. And don’t settle for just one or two friends because 8 out of 10 times they are busy and you are studying all alone. Or they have other friend groups that do not include you. Don’t settle for just one or two friends; make as many friends as you can. After the first couple of weeks of college, most friend groups are set and you may be without friends.

For a moment your world is spinning. The phone alarm has just scared you awake and you’re flooded by daunting thoughts of the day ahead. You have three assignments due and little time to work on them because of your job. You’re running late because you’ve hit snooze one to many times after yesterday’s long hours. You dizzily reach for a hoodie, craving its comfort, and rush for a speedy exit, praying you will have time to pick up coffee. Does this sound familiar?

Finals week is upon us. It is a magical time of year during which college students everywhere flock to the library in attempt to learn a semester's worth of knowledge in only a week. For some students, it's their first time in the library all semester, maybe ever. Others have slaved away many nights under the fluorescent lights, and are slightly annoyed to find their study space being invaded by amateurs. While these newbies wander aimlessly around the first floor, hopelessly trying to find a table, the OGs of the library are already on the third floor long tables deep into their studies. Here is a few signs that you may live in the library, whether you'd like to admit it or not.
