Doubt: when you circle 'round and 'round a question, never actually asking it.
We roll these doubts around in our minds, never daring to speak them out loud.
Why?
The answer is typically something like “They will think I’m weak” or “No one else feels this way.”
You are wrong.
There will never be peace if we hold these questions inside, because the answer will never come from within us.
If it was there, we would have found it already.
During a conversation I recently had, a friend made a comment that it is so difficult for kids who grow up in church to have questions.
I realized that we are only encouraged to answer them…
We recite catechisms and memorize answers to Bible trivia.
So much scripture surrounds our everyday life… It is spoon-fed to us.
And although we “hide God’s Word in our hearts” we don't always let it take root there.
We allow the words to wash over us but sometimes this only feels skin deep.
What are we afraid of? Finding the answer to our questions? Or just finding more questions?
Questions must be asked. BIG questions…questions that will shake a soul and send a mind racing night after night.
Questions like:
- If I don’t care, if I don’t feel it…am a saved?
- If God is good, why do bad things happen?
- How can my sin be conquered if I still struggle with it on a daily basis?
- if my entire faith is based off of one single event in history, what if that event did not actually happen?
We whisper these things in the back of our minds and we hate the silence that echoes back.
Let me just say, you are not alone. If a question has been asked once, chances are it has been asked many times. And maybe, just maybe, someone out there has already found the very same answer you are looking for.
I heard someone say once that the truth is not afraid of questions.
Jesus: The Way, THE TRUTH, and The Life, is NOT afraid of our questions…
Why aren’t we asking them?
