Double Standards Women Have to Deal With

Why can't we lift and watch sports in peace?

Double Standards Women Have to Deal With

It is quite obvious that women are treated differently than men. There are thousands of videos on the internet that show woman being cat called and followed while walking down the street. But do we ever see that type of harassment happen to men? Very rarely. Woman are held to a different standard than men are and to be honest it’s completely ridiculous! These are just some of the double standards that woman today face.

1) Speaking our minds

Woman get badgered so much when we speak our minds. We get called rude, disrespectful, and out of line amongst other things. However, when a man speaks his mind he gets praised. But why? Why is it ok for a man to say what he is feeling or stick up for himself but it’s rude when a woman does?

2)We can’t go to the gym

I know so many women who go to the gym and lift. The most amazing part about it is that going to the gym gives these women an amazing amount of confidence! But why is it that when a woman has bigger muscles she gets called manly and unlady-like? For men on the other hand, larger muscles are praised. There’s absolutely nothing wrong with woman having muscle! Ladies, all of those men who are calling you “manly” are probably just jealous of you, so go ahead and keep on lifting more than them!

3) Woman are judged on their physical features

Let’s walk down memory lane and go back to the 2008 presidential election. Sarah Palin was chosen as John McCain’s running mate. During that election period almost every news outlet and online media source talked about Palin and McCain. However, the interesting part of this was what was talked about each candidate. McCain’s plans for if he was president was the central topic for him. Palin’s home life, wardrobe, and physical appearance were the central topic for her. We see women being judged so much for how they look and dress rather than their mind. While this almost never happens for men.

4) Having friends of the opposite gender

This is one that really makes me upset. When a female has a lot of male friends she is often labeled as “easy” or a “slut”. Why? What is so wrong with a female having a lot of male friends? You become friends with people who you connect with and have common interests with so who really cares what gender those people are. On the opposite side, when a male has a lot of female friends he gets praised! He all of a sudden becomes “the man” and people applaud him for it. This whole idea of it being ok for males to have a lot of friends of the opposite gender but not for females is just completely ridiculous.

5) Prim and Proper

There have been countless times where I have witnessed other woman being told they should dress up and look nicer while males near them are wearing shorts and a t-shirt. News flash: that’s what a lot of us like to wear too! It is way more comfortable to throw on a pair of Nike shorts and a t-shirt rather than dressing up. Don’t get me wrong, we also like to get all dressed up on special occasions. Keywords being “special occasions”. Along with the way we dress, the way we are “allowed” to speak is also different than men. Men are “allowed” to swear and if they do then it’s perfectly fine. No one gets shocked or stunned by it. But if a woman swears? Well, the earth might as well end at that point.

6) We can’t love sports

A majority of guys love sports! They have their favorite teams and they know basically every stat imaginable for those teams. Women apparently can’t do that. If a woman tells a man that she likes a certain sports team, she is automatically asked ridiculous questions about stats and players to see if she is a “true fan”. Look, I don’t need to know all of the stats to like a team. Also, I know more about the teams I follow than you think I do. Women get really into sports! Just ask anyone who watched Super Bowl 49 with me.

Summer: a time (usually) free from school work and a time to relax with your friends and family. Maybe you go on a vacation or maybe you work all summer, but the time off really does help. When you're in college you become super close with so many people it's hard to think that you won't see many of them for three months. But, then you get that text saying, "Hey, clear your schedule next weekend, I'm coming up" and you begin to flip out. Here are the emotions you go through as your best friend makes her trip to your house.

Winter break is over, we're all back at our respective colleges, and the first week of classes is underway. This is a little bit how that week tends to go.

The professor starts to go over something more than the syllabus

You get homework assigned on the first day of class

There are multiple group projects on the syllabus

You learn attendance is mandatory and will be taken every class

Professor starts chatting about their personal life and what inspired them to teach this class

Participation is mandatory and you have to play "icebreaker games"

Everybody is going out because its 'syllabus week' but you're laying in bed watching Grey's Anatomy

Looking outside anytime past 8 PM every night of this week

Nobody actually has any idea what's happening this entire week

Syllabus week is over and you realize you actually have to try now...or not

Now it's time to get back into the REAL swing of things. Second semester is really here and we all have to deal with it.

panera bread

Whether you specialized in ringing people up or preparing the food, if you worked at Panera Bread it holds a special place in your heart. Here are some signs that you worked at Panera in high school.

1. You own so many pairs of khaki pants you don’t even know what to do with them

Definitely the worst part about working at Panera was the uniform and having someone cute come in. Please don’t look at me in my hat.

7 Ways to Make Your Language More Transgender and Nonbinary Inclusive

With more people becoming aware of transgender and non-binary people, there have been a lot of questions circulating online and elsewhere about how to be more inclusive. Language is very important in making a space safer for trans and non-binary individuals. With language, there is an established and built-in measure of whether a place could be safe or unsafe. If the wrong language is used, the place is unsafe and shows a lack of education on trans and non-binary issues. With the right language and education, there can be more safe spaces for trans and non-binary people to exist without feeling the need to hide their identities or feel threatened for merely existing.
