Here's To The Double Standards Of Life

Just because they're there, doesn't mean we have to listen.

They tell us we need to be a size 0, but "0 isn't a size." They tell us to be ourselves, but not so much where we go against what everyone else is doing. They tell us to be unique and have our own sense of style, but tear us down when we don't look like the rest of them. They tell us that "strong is the new skinny," but we can't be too big. They tell us that we can do anything we set our minds to, but only within the certain standards they set. They tell us we need to have a man to be happy, but that we are the only ones to make ourselves happy.

They tell us we don't need a fairytale story, but if it doesn't turn out that way then something is wrong with us. They tell us that we should be brave and speak our minds, but only when spoken to. They tell us that our worth is based on what we think of ourselves, but it's a man who determines it. They tell us that we shouldn't care so much, but to care just enough.

They tell us that we have to fit the shape of an hourglass or an apple, but tell us anything is beautiful. They tell us that we are all beautiful, but encourage plastic surgery. They tell us we are unhappy if we are single until our 30's, but say we can make ourselves happy. They tell us that partying is the only way to have fun, but tell us that it doesn't have to be for everyone.

They tell us that we can use our natural beauty, but if we don't wear makeup then we aren't as pretty. They tell us we are capable of being leaders, but can't handle the responsibilities. They tell us we can wear whatever we want to, but it can't be distracting to boys. They tell us to have our own sense of style, but only it's the name brands they tell us to wear. They tell us that the only way to be happy is having a man, but we can make our own happiness.

They can try to tell us that our worth comes from the people around us, but we know it comes from what we think of ourselves. They can try to tell us that we need to be a size 0 to be pretty, but we know that we are beautiful no matter what size. They can try to tell us that a man is the only way to true happiness, but we know that we can make ourselves happy. They can try to tell us that we have to stay within the certain standards they set, but we know that any limit that is set, we can set a new limit. They can try to tell us that we need makeup to be beautiful, but we know we look just as good without it.

They can try to tell us that we have to wear the certain brands they want us to, but we know we can wear whatever we want to. They can try to tell us that we have to be exactly like everyone else, but we know that individuality is important. They can try to tell us that partying is the only way to have fun, but we know that that's not what life is all about. They can try to tell us that we can't be happy if we don't follow the rules, but we know we make our own rules.

6 Signs You Are An English Major

There are various stereotypes about college students, most of which revolve around the concept of your major. Unfortunately, we often let stereotypes precede our own judgments, and we take what information is immediately available to us rather than forming our own opinions after considerable reflection. If I got a dollar for every time my friends have made a joke about my major I could pay my tuition. One stereotype on campus is the sensitive, overly critical and rigid English major. Here are six telltale signs you are one of them.
