"The only rule is don't be boring and dress cute wherever you go. Life is too short to blend in." -Paris Hilton
I am a 6'0", white, female and I am TIRED of all the BS with dress code and double standards. I know no one likes to admit it but race does have to do with how often you get dress coded. It is also VERY obvious that females get dress coded more than males.
The rule at my school is "fingertip length" meaning, if you put your arms by your sides and your shorts are shorter than you fingertips you are violating dress code. The fingertip rule also applies to holes in your shorts/pants, if there is a hole in your britches above your fingertips it is against dress code. I have a question though:
How do you expect a 6'0" girl to find shorts that pass her fingertips that aren't making me look like a 50-year-old mother?! Answer: YOU CAN"T. It is almost physically impossible to find a pair of shorts that aren't either to my knees or showing half my ass.
The rules for dress code are RIDICULOUS and create double standards. For example: (back on the shorts topic) there are guys at my school who can wear Chubbies and the bottom of the shorts go past their mid-thigh. It is honestly kinda terrifying.
Now onto shoulders. OH NO NOT THE SHOULDERS THEY TURN ME ON! This rule ticks me off to an extent I can't explain. Girls cannot show their shoulders or bra straps. OH NO I'M WEARING A BRA?! THANK YOU FOR TELLING ME! Stop with the double standards people! I have very broad shoulders (I am a swimmer, it happens) and t-shirts are a pain in the neck to find that aren't too tight or make me look like a homeless person, so I tend to wear tank tops. Tank tops let my big shoulders be as big as they want and not feel constricted to t-shirt material. I see guys wearing "sleeveless" shirts and showing all kind of chest at school but so help the Lord if I show my shoulder. Oh I'm sorry is my shoulder distracting? So is THAT guy's nipple.
Now onto the double standard BS. They tell me that guys can wear these short shorts and skimpy tank tops because it lets them be more comfortable. Now if a girl wears short shorts or a tank top they say that it is "distracting" to guys. All of my friends (for the most part) are guys and never once have they been "distracted" by my shoulders; they are too distracted by their cellphones or their own conversations. Now I am not saying it is all gender biased, AT ALL, race is involved too. Now some people might tell me I am racist and maybe I am not seeing everything at my school and maybe it isn't like this at your school, but I am stating what I see and how it ticks me off.
At my school, I notice that caucasian students get dress coded more than people of color. I hate saying it but it is true. I have seen people show up in crop tops and booty shorts and yet they can get away with it. I've worn a tank top ONCE this school year and got dress coded for it and forced to wear a jacket all day. I am not gonna spend a lot of time on this topic (I know talking about race makes everyone uncomfortable) but it bothers me that it's so true.
Don't humiliate her because she is wearing shorts. It is hot outside. Instead of shaming girls for wearing "inappropriate" clothing, teach guys that girls are NOT sexual objects.
Okay, so I am going to wrap this up, I have a message for all schools, STOP DRESS CODING GIRLS ONLY FOR STUPID BS! WE JUST WANT TO BE CUTE AND COMFORTABLE! ANOTHER THING, STOP DRESS CODING MOSTLY WHITE PEOPLE IN GENERAL! MAYBE I AM CONFIDENT IN MY BODY AND WANT TO SHOW SOME MIDRIFF BECAUSE I WANT TO BE HAPPY! STOP! STOP! STOP!
