DOTS Or The Devil: The Shocking Similarities

I love having a car on campus but with that comes responsibilities - one of which is parking. Finding parking on the University of Maryland campus can be a huge issue for many. The university offers a limited amount of parking spots in their parking lots so it is a battle to get the rare parking pass for one of the prestigious lots such as Mowatt Garage. Once you pick from a variety of parking lots far from where you live, you must now deal with the real issue.

The aggressive ticketing tactics that DOTS is responsible for is one of the major issues and causes student drivers lots of unnecessary stress. Finding a parking spot is hard enough, but now with DOTS at every corner of any street on campus, make sure not to park in the wrong place. Don't even think about parking at a meter and not paying. I learned the hard way. After being parked for 10 minutes, I walked down from my dorm to find a ticket on my windshield. However, in terms of DOTS ticketing, I would be considered very lucky. My friend was not as lucky.

My friend was looking for parking outside of Eppley and parked in a lot with a sign that read "permit only Mon-Fri". It was Saturday so it seems like it should be no problem to park there. Wrong! The sign had underneath in small print that the lot was restricted to faculty only. A ticket was waiting for my friend for $80 when he got out from his workout. His day and experience with DOTS didn't end there that day. DOTS had another trick up their sleeve.

When driving back to my friend's apartment, he made a quick stop at a friend's place. While there for 15 minutes, he comes out to a bright, yellow car. A sign pointed out that cars are towed at their owner's expense and that the car is in Greenbelt. When he thought his day wasn't getting any worse, it did. A $80 ticket and a towed car were enough to deal with for my friend from DOTS.

The moral of the story is to not have a car on campus. Just leave that at home. If you need one on campus or are a commuter then follow these rules. Before you leave your car parked, check the signs. Park in a metered lot and not in a residential zone as they ticket them quickly.

New year, new semester, not the same old thing. This semester will be a semester to redeem all the mistakes made in the previous five months.

1. I will wake up (sorta) on time for class.

Let's face it, last semester you woke up with enough time to brush your teeth and get to class and even then you were about 10 minutes late and rollin' in with some pretty unfortunate bed head. This semester we will set our alarms, wake up with time to get ready, and get to class on time!

And so it begins.

1. Walk in motivated and ready to rock

Camping out at the library is not for the faint of heart. You need to go in as a warrior. You usually have brought supplies (laptop, chargers, and textbooks) and sustenance (water, snacks, and blanket/sweatpants) since the battle will be for an undetermined length of time. Perhaps it is one assignment or perhaps it's four. You are motivated and prepared; you don’t doubt the assignment(s) will take time, but you know it couldn’t be that long.

December... it's full of finals, due dates, Mariah Carey, and the holidays. It's the worst time of the year, but the best because after finals, you get to not think about classes for a month and catch up on all the sleep you lost throughout the semester. But what's worse than finals week is the last week of classes, when all the due dates you've put off can no longer be put off anymore.

Thanksgiving break is over and Christmas is just around the corner and that means, for most college students, one hellish thing — finals week. It's the one time of year in which the library becomes over populated and mental breakdowns are most frequent. There is no way to avoid it or a cure for the pain that it brings. I know every college student has daily thoughts throughout their day. Whether you're walking on campus or attending class, we always have thoughts running a mile a minute through our heads. We may be wondering why we even showed up to class because we'd rather be sleeping, or when the professor announces that we have a test and you have an immediate panic attack.
