Being a college tour guide, I’ve seen and heard it all. From little kids asking me why I’m in college because I’m short to someone not laughing at any of my jokes--here are 11 things you should and shouldn't do or say while on a campus tour:
1. DO ask us personal questions! Ask why we chose this school, what sports we play—anything like that. It makes the tour much more enjoyable to give and gives it a little personal touch
2. DON’T ask us what we did during the weekend. Because most likely it’s an answer your parents wouldn’t want to hear
3. DO laugh at our jokes…even if its corny. It makes it a little less awkward.
4. DON’T ask about inappropriate traditions you’ve read on Wikipedia…because most likely it’s an actual thing and it’ll be awkward (yay for May!).
5. DO be respectful. We’re students too and whether it’s a job or not, we’re taking time out of the typical busy college schedule to show you our amazing campus. So silence your phone for about an hour or so and enjoy the tour.
6. DON’T overwhelm us about all the extracurricular activities you’ve done in high school. Save that for the interview with your admissions counselor. I’m 100% sure they’ll LOVE to know that.
7. DO tell us if we’re about to run into anything. Walking backwards while talking to a group of people isn’t the easiest thing & we don’t have eyes in the back of our head so you gotta let us know if we’re about to crash into a pole, a person or a wall—it’ll make our lives much easier.
8. DON’T ask us how much financial aid we were given to attend the school. Save the money questions for Financial Aid.
9. DO try to talk to other students if you have the chance! Get other perspectives of the college.
10. DON’T compare us to other schools. You’re here at our school, so enjoy the time you have here and learn why we’re the best choice for you!
11. DO enjoy the college searching process. Visiting multiple colleges may be hectic and stressful but it’s something you’ll only do once so enjoy it while you can!
