The College Experience, Explained By Dory

Let's be honest with ourselves here: no one in college has it together all the time. In fact, I'm lucky if I've got my life in order 22 percent of the time. Sure, we can all relate to each other on that level and sometimes knowing you're in the same boat as your fellow classmates can be reassuring. But sometimes it's not enough. You need more. You need reassurance that you are not alone in this life...someone you can connect to beyond the classroom doors. Someone that knows what it's like to experience love and loss and the in between. Her name is Dory.

Don't fear. You are not alone. Dory explains all of us at one point or another in college:

1. Arriving as a wee little freshman eager to experience the thrills of college.

2. Seeing your bed after a long day at class.

3. Accidentally getting separated from your friends when you go out.

4. Trying to cheer up your roommate after they fail an exam.

5. Failing your own exam.

6. Trying to impress the person interviewing you so you finally get a job.

7. When the boy you've been kind of, sort of seeing ends things for...well, basically no reason.

8. Trying to get ready when you wake up 10 minutes before your 8 AM.

9. Popping by your friend's room just to say hi.

10. When your professor calls you out for texting during class.

11. Awkwardly trying to flirt with someone you just met.

12. Being convinced someone is trying to break in your house, for the third time that day.

13. Trying to piece together last night's activities.

14. When your classes are going well, you got enough sleep, and you just ate.

15. Above all else, you always know to...

Today I started my third week of college at Minnesota State Moorhead. I have survived welcome week, finding my classes on the first day, and being an awkward loner in the dining hall. Even though I have yet to be here for a month, I have already experienced many thoughts and problems that only a new college student can relate to.

"Make sure to get involved when you're in college!"

We've all heard some variation of this phrase, whether it came from parents, other family members, friends, RAs, or college-related articles. And, like many clichés, it's true for the most part. Getting involved during your college years can help you make friends, build your resume, and feel connected to your campus. However, these commitments can get stressful if you're dealing with personal issues, need to work, or aren't sure how to balance classes and everything else going on during the semester.

For a moment your world is spinning. The phone alarm has just scared you awake and you’re flooded by daunting thoughts of the day ahead. You have three assignments due and little time to work on them because of your job. You’re running late because you’ve hit snooze one to many times after yesterday’s long hours. You dizzily reach for a hoodie, craving its comfort, and rush for a speedy exit, praying you will have time to pick up coffee. Does this sound familiar?

Finals week is upon us. It is a magical time of year during which college students everywhere flock to the library in attempt to learn a semester's worth of knowledge in only a week. For some students, it's their first time in the library all semester, maybe ever. Others have slaved away many nights under the fluorescent lights, and are slightly annoyed to find their study space being invaded by amateurs. While these newbies wander aimlessly around the first floor, hopelessly trying to find a table, the OGs of the library are already on the third floor long tables deep into their studies. Here is a few signs that you may live in the library, whether you'd like to admit it or not.

1. People assume you are mad all of the time.

2. Ten out of ten times you will give off an intimidating impression to others.

3. People do not acknowledge your feelings because you "do not have any."

4. Constantly being exhausted from trying to smile and not look like a witch.

5. And on the rare occasion your facial expressions show how happy you are, your friends think you are going crazy.

6. Each of your friends has said "I thought you were so mean when I first met you" at some point.

7. Then they follow that by saying "you are just hard to read."

8. So naturally if people do not know you they just assume you are a snob.

9. And when you are actually mad, your facial expressions are horrifying.

10. In the end you always look like you are judging people, when in reality people are ALWAYS judging you.
