I can distinctly remember these exact words from my roommate: "This place feels like a jail cell." Your college dorm is what you make it, and the homier, the better. This place where you'll be living nine months out of the year, and spending a decent amount of time in is important to keep as comfortable and "lived-in" as possible. For more ideas that expand past this idea, refer to Pinterest! Just make sure to adhere to all of your residence hall's rules, especially any fire codes.
1. Pictures
This isn't a jail cell, so make it as personal as possible. You're going to miss your family, pets, and friends from back home, no matter how close you live to them. Whether it's with picture frames, artsy clothes lines, or taping them to the wall, they'll add color and life to your room.
2. Good Lighting
Nothing says jail cell more than a dark dreary room. Not every residence hall comes with overhead lighting, so make sure that you bring anything necessary, and also that it's bright enough. Remember, this is where you'll not only be hanging out with your friends but also studying and doing homework when you're not at the library.
3. Dorm Decor
You can find this tab on any home goods website, especially Target or Bed Bath & Beyond. Posters, tapestries, signs, rugs throw pillows, or anything else that jumps out at you mainly to add color and personality, but also to cover what will most likely be a cinder block wall.
4. Magnets
Believe it or not, fun magnets on your fridge can really add some life to your dorm room.
5. A Bomb-Ass Bed
I highly suggest this, as your bed is where you will probably spend these four years of your life. A mattress pad is #1, whether it's a memory foam topper or a simple egg-crate, it will make a major difference. Also, a comforter you won't get sick of easily, and--again-- pillows!
Note: reversible comforters are a must.
6. The Right People
You wouldn't surround yourself with negative people at home so don't allow it in your dorm. Come to an agreement with your roommate (some schools use Roommate Agreement Contracts) on when you want company, and if you find yourself in the company of some you'd rather not, talk it out because it will make for a better, more comfortable environment.
7. Good Food
If at all possible, home cooked food takes the cake (mmm... cake). Sometimes, that's not possible, so stack your dorm room with good snacks!
Good luck moving it all in!
