Dorm Must-Haves

The key to surviving the dorm life.

Dorm Must-Haves

For most people, the end of summer is right around the corner. The school year is quickly approaching and some people are about to experience college for the first time. For some of those people, they are about to experience the dorm life.

I will be the first to admit that living in the dorms wasn't my favorite thing about my freshman year of college. The dorms I lived in were old and I really missed having my own space. No matter how much I disliked it at times, I definitely believe that it is part of the college experience.

Here are some things I think are important to have in your dorm to make it feel like home and that I loved having:

1. Cute decorations

Your dorm room is your home for a whole year. Make sure it is decorated like you want it and feels comfortable to you. That half of your room is your space, so make it feel like your space. Let decorating your dorm be your opportunity to be creative. Also, having decorations for certain holidays makes it that much more fun!

2. Mini fridge/microwave

Don't get me wrong, having a meal plan was so nice. It meant I didn't have to spend money on food, cook or worry about what I was going to make for dinner. However, there are only so many meals you can eat in the dining halls before feeling sick of them. Having a mini fridge and microwave was SO nice because it gave me the opportunity to have other food in my dorm if I wanted. It also helped me satisfy my occasional midnight-snack urges.

3. Place to comb my hair and do my makeup

I was blessed to live in a dorm where I didn't have a community bathroom. I shared a bathroom with three other girls and didn't have to wander to the end of the hall to use the restroom. However, I didn't like combing my hair or doing my makeup in our bathroom. We all had different schedules and I didn't want to be in there when someone needed to shower or use the area. Having a mirror and area to glam myself in my dorm was great because I didn't feel like I was in anybody's way, I could take as much or as little times as I wanted and the lighting was so much better in the room.

4. Keurig (!!!!!)

I can't emphasize this enough!!! Coffee is a saving grace in college and you quickly learn that it becomes your life line. That being said, you will probably drink a lot of it and not want to wait in the Starbucks line everyday or spend lots of money. Having a Keurig in my room was so nice because I could make coffee whenever I wanted it and wasn't dropping a bunch of money on it. I could roll out of bed and get some, instead of having to get ready and walk to the closest coffee shop. It is so convenient and let's be real, the smell of coffee really helps waking up in the morning.

These are items that helped me during my dorm life. I hope they help you and you enjoy your time in your dorm!

Today I started my third week of college at Minnesota State Moorhead. I have survived welcome week, finding my classes on the first day, and being an awkward loner in the dining hall. Even though I have yet to be here for a month, I have already experienced many thoughts and problems that only a new college student can relate to.

"Make sure to get involved when you're in college!"

We've all heard some variation of this phrase, whether it came from parents, other family members, friends, RAs, or college-related articles. And, like many clichés, it's true for the most part. Getting involved during your college years can help you make friends, build your resume, and feel connected to your campus. However, these commitments can get stressful if you're dealing with personal issues, need to work, or aren't sure how to balance classes and everything else going on during the semester.

In college, one of the essential things to have is friends. Yes, textbooks, a laptop, and other school supplies are important but friends are essential. Friends are that support system everybody needs. The more friends you have the better the support system you have. But you also have someone to share experiences with. And don’t settle for just one or two friends because 8 out of 10 times they are busy and you are studying all alone. Or they have other friend groups that do not include you. Don’t settle for just one or two friends; make as many friends as you can. After the first couple of weeks of college, most friend groups are set and you may be without friends.

For a moment your world is spinning. The phone alarm has just scared you awake and you’re flooded by daunting thoughts of the day ahead. You have three assignments due and little time to work on them because of your job. You’re running late because you’ve hit snooze one to many times after yesterday’s long hours. Finals week is upon us. It is a magical time of year during which college students everywhere flock to the library in attempt to learn a semester's worth of knowledge in only a week. For some students, it's their first time in the library all semester, maybe ever. Others have slaved away many nights under the fluorescent lights, and are slightly annoyed to find their study space being invaded by amateurs. While these newbies wander aimlessly around the first floor, hopelessly trying to find a table, the OGs of the library are already on the third floor long tables deep into their studies. Here is a few signs that you may live in the library, whether you'd like to admit it or not.
