Dorm Life Is Important

It's expensive, yet it's worth it.

Dorm Life Is Important

I was talking to my parents the other night about dorm life. They believe that "dorm life" is a waste of money. While I do agree with them that it is expensive to live on campus, there is so much about living on campus that is important. While I don't think that it is mandatory, I feel as though young adults should be given the opportunity to live on their campus. Here are five important things that I have learned through living in a dorm that I feel have been beneficial to my personal growth.

1. You meet people that are nothing like you. When living in a dorm you will meet all kinds of people. You won't like everyone. Some people will leave their doors open and yell 24 hours a day. Others will barley talk to anyone and just stay out of the way. You learn to be respectful of other people’s space and gain an understanding of what type of person you are.

2. Making your own decisions can be hard.Your mom can no longer check to make sure you've completed all your homework before going out. You don't have a bedtime anymore. You can eat whatever you want, whenever you want. Making decisions for yourself can be tough for the first few weeks, but then you have to learn what your priorities are.

3. You will create lifetime friendships that will be better than some of your old friendships.I have made some of the best friends though living in a dorm. I was able to get myself out there and meet some of the best people in my life.

4. The "Freshman 15" is real.In high school you are constantly staying active and you might not realize how much lazier you get from being in college until you go home for winter break. You can just make Easy Mac in your room on a snowy day instead of walking to the cafeteria.

5. Sometimes you just have to get out of your comfort zone.Just like every freshman, I was nervous the first night I moved into my dorm. I knew that my life was going to change dramatically in the next nine months. I started doing different things that I had never done in high school, which changed my life forever. Be ready for adventure. Living in a dorm can really change your view on the world.

For as long as I can remember, I have been listening to The Beatles. Every year, my mom would appropriately blast “Birthday” on anyone’s birthday. I knew all of the words to “Back In The U.S.S.R” by the time I was 5 (Even though I had no idea what or where the U.S.S.R was). I grew up with John, Paul, George, and Ringo instead Justin, JC, Joey, Chris and Lance (I had to google N*SYNC to remember their names). The highlight of my short life was Paul McCartney in concert twice. I’m not someone to “fangirl” but those days I fangirled hard. The music of The Beatles has gotten me through everything. Their songs have brought me more joy, peace, and comfort. I can listen to them in any situation and find what I need. Here are the best lyrics from The Beatles for every and any occasion.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.
