Don't Worry About Not Leaving Home For Spring Break

They got their beaches and mountain hikes, we got our called-off plans to finish.

Don't Worry About Not Leaving Home For Spring Break

I type this as I sit in the middle of my living room, looking outside to see the snow melt from the trees and rooftops. I think of my peers going away for spring break, going to see the vistas in California, trekking out to Texas, visiting families residing from as far as Ireland, Italy, Norway, and further on. By now as I type this, many of them will have boarded their flights and gone on their merry way, for on either the trip of a lifetime, or just a simple visit to grandma’s.

Meanwhile I’ll be stuck working on assignments: readings, essays, media projects that I’ll have to get to early so I won’t regret not doing it by the next weekend. Rather than relaxing on the beach, listening to the waves crashing upon the shore, I’ll be waking up to the morning winter winds blowing across my windows as the snow creeps up in my view.

I’m probably being envious of the fact they are able to go with their friends and families away for their trips, that they get to at least explore before going back to class in a week. After a week of midterms, I could surely use a nap on a hammock under the shade.

But there’s something in me that tells me to not worry about it. In fact, anyone else who’s staying at home for spring break shouldn't fret one bit. For instead of being able to explore cities and go camping with friends, we have both time and flexibility. This extra time’ll come in handy when there’s work to take care of early, and the flexibility to quickly go from getting some R&R to work mode, without the distraction of vacation time.

But what’s most important about staying home is the chance to finally catch up on what’s been put off during midterm season. From catching up with friends, to starting on where you left off in a passion project, to finally finishing up that book, do yourself a favor and get back to what you’ve put off now during spring break. Yes, though we’d rather go out and see the world, nothing else in the world beats checking off long-stalled plans.

So to anyone that’s planning to travel to visit family, take in new sights, relax on a beach, etc., may you have a restful and fulfilling retreat. Make the most of your short time on vacation, wherever you are. You’ll never know where the time is until it's gone.

But to anyone who stays, treat yourself whenever you can, but get down to that business as soon as you can during spring break. Trust me when I say that you’ll thank yourself as you go to bed on time the night before going back to college.

Today I started my third week of college at Minnesota State Moorhead. I have survived welcome week, finding my classes on the first day, and being an awkward loner in the dining hall. Even though I have yet to be here for a month, I have already experienced many thoughts and problems that only a new college student can relate to.

"Make sure to get involved when you're in college!"

We've all heard some variation of this phrase, whether it came from parents, other family members, friends, RAs, or college-related articles. And, like many clichés, it's true for the most part. Getting involved during your college years can help you make friends, build your resume, and feel connected to your campus. However, these commitments can get stressful if you're dealing with personal issues, need to work, or aren't sure how to balance classes and everything else going on during the semester.

In college, one of the essential things to have is friends. Yes, textbooks, a laptop, and other school supplies are important but friends are essential. Friends are that support system everybody needs. The more friends you have the better the support system you have. But you also have someone to share experiences with. And don’t settle for just one or two friends because 8 out of 10 times they are busy and you are studying all alone. Or they have other friend groups that do not include you. Don’t settle for just one or two friends; make as many friends as you can. After the first couple of weeks of college, most friend groups are set and you may be without friends.

For a moment your world is spinning. The phone alarm has just scared you awake and you’re flooded by daunting thoughts of the day ahead. You have three assignments due and little time to work on them because of your job. You’re running late because you’ve hit snooze one to many times after yesterday’s long hours. You dizzily reach for a hoodie, craving its comfort, and rush for a speedy exit, praying you will have time to pick up coffee. Does this sound familiar?

Finals week is upon us. It is a magical time of year during which college students everywhere flock to the library in attempt to learn a semester's worth of knowledge in only a week. For some students, it's their first time in the library all semester, maybe ever. Others have slaved away many nights under the fluorescent lights, and are slightly annoyed to find their study space being invaded by amateurs. While these newbies wander aimlessly around the first floor, hopelessly trying to find a table, the OGs of the library are already on the third floor long tables deep into their studies. Here is a few signs that you may live in the library, whether you'd like to admit it or not.
