I'm sure we've all heard (or even said ourselves) comments about other girls' makeup, saying it's "too much" or that they're trying to impress others, but who's to say what others can and can't do with their own bodies? Makeup is art; sure, your face is the canvas, but that just makes it that much cooler. It allows you to transform your features into anything you want them to be, and having that power is awesome, so why not do it? There are so many reasons that people love to wear makeup, and being degraded for something you love to do is absolutely unacceptable.
Self-expression is such an important thing to be able to do without being criticized for it. Some people express themselves through sports or music, but they don't get shamed for what they do, so anyone should be able to wear makeup freely without being criticized left and right. Some people have no idea how much time people spend practicing their makeup to become good at it. People develop a passion for makeup that's just like anyone else's passion for sports, playing instruments or whatever it is you love to do. There's no shame in being passionate.
Wearing makeup does not imply that there is a desire to impress others. I can assure you that girls do not get up in the morning thinking that they need to impress someone today, so they throw on a bunch of makeup. People do their makeup for themselves, and to make themselves feel good, and no one should be tearing someone down for doing what makes them feel good. I don't wear makeup every day because I just don't have the time, but when my makeup is on fleek, damn, I feel good.
Makeup is fun. It's just like painting a picture; you have the freedom to create whatever image you like. You can experiment with different colors, techniques, products, brands -- the possibilities are endless, and I think that's what makes makeup such a cool hobby. There are always new products coming out, and if you're a makeup addict like me, you blow every paycheck on new makeup to play with. But it's worth it when you find new products that you love and that work well for you.
Who makes these rules that say how much makeup is "too much," anyway? Some people are only comfortable wearing light foundation, and some are comfortable wearing full-coverage foundation, a bold smoky eye, false lashes and a sharp contour. Only the person wearing the makeup can be the one to say how much is "too much" for them.
Most importantly, you should be able to do what you want with your body. Whether you want to cover yourself in tattoos, color your hair hot pink or just put on some makeup that washes off at the end of the day anyway.
