Don't underestimate, don't be defeated is something I tell myself when I’m playing golf and not playing so great. But recently it has become so relevant in my everyday life. I am a third-year college student majoring in Biology, with probably more hopes and dreams than the time I have to accomplish them. As I’m writing this I am multitasking -- studying for my Botany exam, that is approaching quicker than I thought, and attempting to catch up on Chicago Med. Sometimes I just feel so overwhelmed by everything that I let the negative parts of my mind get the best of me. At those times, I have to remind myself that I am simply doing all of this for a reason.
I’ve always wanted to be a doctor, it is truly all I have been wholeheartedly passionate about. Growing up I was told to do something that I love because doing something you love as a living isn’t necessarily a job; it makes your life more fun and you as a person will be happier. My advice to anyone that is super busy and overwhelmed, keep reminding yourself why you are doing what you are doing. There is something inside you that has driven you to want to do it.
In times of feeling overwhelmed we tend to not do our best at things, we over think and we are stressed. Then following all of that comes the feeling of defeat. The “I can’t do this,” or the “I should just quit”. In my case, I start to underestimate my mental abilities and personal skills. I feel that when you underestimate yourself, others underestimate you as well. And when that happens you feel like there is no hope; in other words, defeat.
My advice to anyone feeling down or low with any circumstance, try your best to not first underestimate your abilities and why you started doing what you are doing. Secondly, do not feel defeated. No matter what, whether you fell from the top or you are remaining an underdog. Always remind yourself why you do what you do; remind your mind and heart of your dreams and goals.
