I used to be a person who loved to sleep in on Saturday mornings. Late Friday nights always turned into Saturday mornings when I didn't get out of bed until 10 or so (unless I had something to do that day, in which case I'd be up at a normal time).
Especially in a college dorm, Saturday mornings are quiet. The lights in the hall are dark, people are still in their rooms and there are very few people out and about on campus or up in the dining hall.
So I loved these lazy mornings. I loved catching up on sleep and staying in my pajamas.
And then one Saturday morning, I did something unusual. I got up at a normal weekday time.
While the rest of the building was sleepy and quiet, I started my day. I found the laundry rooms to be empty. So were the showers. I was able to do my laundry and clean up my room, clean our sink in the room, take a shower, get dressed, make tea and have the laundry folded and put away by nearly 9 in the morning. It was beautiful.
Unsurprisingly, this has become my Saturday morning routine. Get up, make tea, do laundry, enjoy the silence and the time to get things done. I've now realized how much time I was wasting all those Saturday mornings when I would do nothing but sleep in.
Being a productive morning person makes me feel better about myself, and keeps my body in a similar everyday wake up regimen. It gives me peace and quiet time to myself, to reflect on the week and relax and prepare for the coming week. It is, simply, a fabulous way to start my weekend. I especially love the feeling that comes with being one of the few people up and around in the morning in a hall full of girls.
I'm not writing this to shame you if you love that Saturday morning sleep-in, but I will say, think about how much time you spend sleeping, and think of the other things you could accomplish if you didn't sleep in. I used to think my parents were crazy for getting up early on Saturday mornings, especially when I was a moody teenager who hated being up before 11. But now I see it. The peace of a new morning, the time to collect yourself, talk to God, and just have some unstructured "you" time.
I love it.
You should try it sometime.
