I am a college student and seem to be caught in a never ending cycle of “brokeness.” I am either semi-broke, broke, really broke or broke broke. However, that’s not uncommon among those of us matriculating twenty somethings. In fact, it’s almost a bit odd to be able to make lavish purchases and be able to fill up your gas tank all the way (Seriously though).
While being a college student is equated with financial hardship, it also seems to equate with being a lousy tipper. I may be alone in this, but I can almost see the defeat in a waiter/waitresses' eyes when my friends and I go out to eat. Oh boy, college students. The general consensus seems to be that students (perhaps even young people in general) are already patting their pockets for change and are less likely to leave a decent tip. I admit there are times when I leave less than I know I should. However, I try to tip the full 15% of the bill, 20% for exceptional service. Why?
Because I get it.
I know what it's like to be on your feet all day, to have to put on a cheerful facade even if you're boiling on the inside, to have to relate to people all day. It's exhausting. And, a lot of waiters and waitresses are college students themselves. That doubles the understanding.
If you're a working college student and you are going out to eat, or order pizza, please don't skip on the tip. You're helping someone pay for their textbooks, their rent, or their dream trip. Isn't that worth the couple extra bucks?
