You Don't Have To Settle If You Don't Want To

You are worth more. You deserve more.

Settling.

It is what today's society loves to do most.

We settle for that C+ because it is still considered a passing grade.

We settle for that low wage job because it is what we feel as though we are most qualified to do.

We settle for that scum of a boy because we fear the thought of being alone.

What I am here to tell you however is, don't settle.

Do not settle because you feel like you have to. Do not settle because you feel like you are unworthy of more.

And certainly, do not settle because you feel like that what you have is all you got.

Because I can assure you, that is false.

Settling for less than what we deserve is what more often than not many people fall guilty of.

For some reason, a good portion of today's society has this idea engraved into their head that they are worth less than what they actually are.

God put you on this Earth for a reason.

You are worth every ounce and every cell of your waking body for a reason.

Do not waste the living breathing lungs inside your body for something or someone that you know you are far better than.

And do not settle for what you believe is your duty on this Earth to do.

Screw the norm.

Screw what you think you are "meant" to do in your career just because it is what your major was in college.

And screw what other people think that you should do.

DO WHAT YOU WANT TO DO.

If you hate your job and are only in it for the money, quit.

If the guy you are dating isn't living up to your expectations but you stay with him anyways so that you won't wind up sleeping alone tonight, dump him.

If you are half way through college and are pursuing a degree that you can't stand, change it.

Do not settle for something that does not bring life into your eyes each and every day.

You are worth more. You deserve more.

Stop the continuous train of doing things that just aren't quite right for you.

And stop being afraid to fail because you do not know what will happen after you do.

We need to remove this rarity of doing things for our own well-being.

And we certainly need to remove this ingrained fear that is dug into the roots of our soul, that hinders us from bettering ourselves.

I think the main reason why we settle far more often than not is because we as humans are lazy.

You can deny it all you want but I am probably right.

We settle because we do not want to put in the work.

We settle because if society says it is okay, then it is "okay"—I suppose.

But whatever the hell happened to working hard to get what you want? Whatever happened to dreams, wants and wishes? Whatever happened to independence and self-worth?

These are the things that determine how you move through each aspect of your life. It is the lens for which you will see everything else.

Life is all about risks—if you want to do something, f*cking do it.

Shoot for the stars and you might make it to the moon.

But if you keep settling because you feel like you are obliged to, you won't even make it half way.

As college students, we are all familiar with the horror show that is course registration week. Whether you are an incoming freshman or selecting classes for your last semester, I am certain that you can relate to how traumatic this can be.

1. When course schedules are released and you have a conflict between two required classes.

Bonus points if it is more than two.

Raising the minimum wage to a livable wage would not only benefit workers and their families, it would also have positive impacts on the economy and society. Studies have shown that by increasing the minimum wage, poverty and inequality can be reduced by enabling workers to meet their basic needs and reducing income disparities.

I come from a low-income family. A family, like many others in the United States, which has lived paycheck to paycheck. My family and other families in my community have been trying to make ends meet by living on the minimum wage. We are proof that it doesn't work.

Every college student knows and understands the struggle of forcing themselves to continue to care about school. Between the piles of homework, the hours of studying and the painfully long lectures, the desire to dropout is something that is constantly weighing on each and every one of us, but the glimmer of hope at the end of the tunnel helps to keep us motivated. While we are somehow managing to stay enrolled and (semi) alert, that does not mean that our inner-demons aren't telling us otherwise, and who is better to explain inner-demons than the beloved April Ludgate herself? Because of her dark-spirit and lack of filter, April has successfully been able to describe the emotional roller-coaster that is college on at least 13 different occasions and here they are.
