The holidays are a time for loved ones to come together to celebrate their love, appreciation, and acceptance of one another. However, sometimes people overdo the celebration. Oftentimes, individuals drink and drive, particularly on New Year’s Eve. This does not only put the people who are driving in danger, but other fellow drivers are also at risk. Moreover, other potentially damaging behaviors and/or events can potentially occur. Here are some ways to avoid any life-threatening accidents from happening.
- Drink in moderation this holiday season!
- Do not allow Cousin David, who drank too much, to get anywhere near a pair of keys or a car this Christmas.
- Don’t let Uncle Carl cook anything in the oven on Kwanzaa this year after you know he’s already drank too much.
- Do not travel far this holiday season if you think that you will drink.
- Stay close to home during this time of year if you think that you will drink.
- Drive carefully!
- If you sense perilous driving around you, then pull over.
- Find alternative ways to celebrate and reminisce in joy without over-drinking.
- Ensure that sharp knives and other appliances that may be used for holiday cooking are out of the reach of small children.
- Attempt to eat natural food and restrain from consuming processed food.
- Make one of your New Year’s resolutions to exercise because what a perfect time to create a healthy, safe life for yourself as the New Year rolls in!
- If you are unable to control your drunk cousin, who somehow got access to too much wine, then know that it is okay to ask other family members for help!
- Make time with your family and friends the priority and drinking and any other activities secondary!
We should celebrate during the holidays! After all, this is a time of togetherness. However, sometimes we, or people we know, push their substance abuse limits! We must encourage them to follow the above principles, and we must observe these tips ourselves in order to be a role model to those who matter most to us!
