So it's currently two days before my sophomore year of college starts and I'm literally so unprepared for my life. Lol. I haven't bought any of my school supplies, I haven't really looked at my schedule, and I don't even know what I am doing with my life.
But, honestly, college is not that scary. I would just suggest getting prepared for college, unlike me. Get your books in advance, look at your schedule and write it out, get a day planner, buy school supplies, you know, the basics. But that isn't all that this article is about. This article is also about getting involved, and the fact that college is not as scary as you think...I promise.
I spent the last week helping freshmen become prepared and comfortable around campus and I am so glad I had the opportunity to do that. I watched as all of the excited with hint of terrified faces walked through campus, and I got to facilitate all of the fun events to help them become more familiar with each other and college life. I feel so fortunate to have had that opportunity because it really made me reflect on everything that I was nervous about when I was a freshman.
First of all, my suggestion is to get involved. There are over 150 clubs on our campus, and I am sure that at bigger universities there are many many more. Joining a club gives you an immediate network of friends to rely on and an eclectic mix of upper and lower class men to call your allies. Getting involved on campus is so fun and extremely easy to do! It will make your time at a university so much more meaningful.
Second, you should use your resources. Professors are there to teach you and help you. Go to their office hours, go to meetings with them, email them 6,000 times in a semester. Literally they are there for you. There are also a ton of places around campus that will help you succeed. Universities usually have writing centers, math centers, free tutoring options, and a lot more.
Finally, have fun! You will find that you will be working your butt off in college, so don't be afraid to take a break and have some fun. Trust me, you'll deserve it. Honestly, college is a place where you can experience new things and adventures if you choose to, so choose to, because it will be worth it. Enjoy your first year in a new place, fall in love with your campus, make new friends, go on adventures and, overall, make the degree your paying for, worth it.
