You Don't Need To Be Good At Art To Enjoy It

Many of us are steered away from art because we believe we're no good. However, art has emotional benefits that we can't ignore any longer.

You Don't Need To Be Good At Art To Enjoy It

This past summer while I was trying to figure out some hobbies of mine that weren't working out and playing sports, I dabbled in painting and drawing. Spending hours on end trying to create something halfway decent was frustrating since I realized I was no good - well, it wasn't good enough to post my art on my Instagram story. However, creating something I manifested myself allowed me to take the time to focus on something that wasn't stressing me out and release emotions that I was holding inside.

In fact, I find this to be true for the arts of all kinds. Singing, dancing, playing an instrument, or creating something, I was left feeling better than I did before I started. In fact, this phenomenon is nothing new. It is no secret that using the creative parts of our brain releases "feel good" chemicals that do just that. So, why are we letting comparison steal us from these unique, creative joys?

Just because our singing may be off-key, our coloring outside of the lines, or our dancing just spastic movements, that doesn't mean that we can't enjoy ourselves in the process. As someone who has no coordination or rhythm whatsoever, any of my friends or family members will be able to tell you that my dancing skills are something that is definitely not pretty. However, I love dancing because it allows me to express my emotions in a way that is active and creative at the same time. Or even when it comes to painting, I am definitely not the most skilled artist. In fact, the only piece of artwork I have created that is decent enough to hang on my dorm room wall is a picture of a sun. However, painting is something that I find so enjoyable because it takes patience, practice, and just allows our creativity to flow.

I know I'm not the only one who gets discouraged when I see that my creative abilities are not the best. Sometimes, I even put off doing some of those things because I feel I am no good, even though they make me feel better about myself and about life in general. There is something so beautiful, satisfying, and rewarding about finishing a creative project, yet we're too scared to go for it because we think we aren't allowed to enjoy it since we're "no good."

Well, it is time for all of us to break up with that common misconception and start letting ourselves enjoy these things that make us happier, even if we subjectively believe we're no good. Do what makes your world a better place to be because, at the end of the day, we are the creators of our own reality. Scream off-key at the top of your lungs, paint a blob of random colors, and randomly strum at a guitar. Just because we may not be the best at these things, doesn't mean we aren't allowed to enjoy them.

girl with a hat

This is for the girls who have dealt with an emotionally, mentally, physically or verbally abusive father.

The ones who have grown up with a false lens of what love is and how relationships should be. The ones who have cried themselves to sleep wondering why he hurts you and your family so much. This is for all the girls who fall in love with broken boys that carry baggage bigger than their own, thinking it's their job to heal them because you watched your mother do the same.

Blair Waldorf Quote
"DESTINY IS FOR LOSERS. IT'S JUST A STUPID EXCUSE TO WAIT FOR THINGS TO HAPPEN INSTEAD OF MAKING THEM HAPPEN." - BLAIR WALDORF.

The world stopped in 2012 when our beloved show "Gossip Girl" ended. For six straight years, we would all tune in every Monday at 9:00 p.m. to see Upper Eastside royalty in the form of a Burberry headband clad Blair Waldorf. Blair was the big sister that we all loved to hate. How could we ever forget the epic showdowns between her and her frenemy Serena Van Der Woodsen? Or the time she banished Georgina Sparks to a Christian summer camp? How about that time when she and her girls took down Bart Bass? Blair is life. She's taught us how to dress, how to be ambitious, and most importantly, how to throw the perfect shade.

too tired to care

We've all been there. From move-in day to the first finals week in college, your first term is an adventure from start to finish. In honor of college decisions coming out recently, I want to recap some of the most common experiences college freshmen experience.

1. The awkward hellos on move-in day.

You're moving your stuff onto your floor, and you will encounter people you don't know yet in the hallway. They live on your floor, so you'll awkwardly smile and maybe introduce yourself. As you walk away, you will wonder if they will ever speak to you again, but don't worry, there's a good chance that you will make some great friends on your floor!

Recently I completed my freshman year of college, and boy, what an experience. It was a completely new learning environment and I can't believe how much I learned. In an effort to save time, here are the ten biggest lessons I learned from my first year of college.

1. Everyone is in the same boat

For me, the scariest part of starting school was that I was alone, that I wouldn't be able to make any friends and that I would stick out. Despite being told time and time again that everyone had these same feelings, it didn't really click until the first day when I saw all the other freshman looking as uneasy and uncomfortable as me. Therefore, I cannot stress this enough, everyone is feeling as nervous as you.
