First of all, let me define the term "basic." "Basic" is a slang term used to describe white women who like popular mainstream products, music, shows, or movies. This includes: wearing UGG boots, loving Starbucks, wearing leggings, taking multiple selfies, shopping at stores such as Forever 21, using Instagram, watching chick flicks, listening to today’s hits and many more.
Why can’t people wear or do whatever they want? Why does it have to be defined as basic if someone likes a certain store, drink, or food? So, are you saying any girl is a basic white girl if she has an interest in popular mainstream items?
I hate the word basic because there shouldn’t be a definition for things people have an interest in. The word shouldn’t be able to describe ANY person. The word basic has gotten to the point where people no matter what color, shape, size or gender, are afraid to like certain items because it is considered basic. Don't get me wrong, there are women who embrace the word but I am not one of them. Growing up Asian-American, I was always afraid to do certain things or like a certain item because people would call me a basic white girl. People would tell me I am more white than Asian because I like basic white girl items. It is so absurd to think that the things that I have an interest in make me so basic.
In honesty, who cares what people like and what they don’t like? Everyone is their own person and has their own personality. So don’t deprive yourself of doing things you love and buying those leggings at Forever 21 because they look bomb on you! Maybe take a selfie with it if you like, because the word basic should not be able to describe you.
I'm not going to let that word describe my likes and interest. So, I’m going to go shopping at Forever 21, get my favorite drink at Starbucks, and watch my favorite movie “The Notebook” while lounging around in my comfy leggings because I’m not basic, I”m a human with an interest.
