Don't Let Life Happen, Make It Happen

Every single person in this world has some sort of dream or idea of what they want to achieve in life or how their future should turn out. For many this dream is hazy and may even seem so far off that many just wait under the impression that if that's what I want in life, then it will eventually happen. Unfortunately, that thought is far from the truth as we have been given the power and tools to determine what we will become. I feel as if most of us sit back and relax in times where we should be doing the exact opposite if we want a specific future whether that entails: traveling, achieving an award, sports, grades, relationships, acquiring a certain job, etc. All of these things are common goals or aspects of our futures that we desire, but most of us rarely reach our desires simply because they remain desires. We make the mistake of sitting back and allowing our unique wants and plans to become discussions among friends and loved ones, and they seem to remain as discussions as they never materialize into our own realities. Our goals always seem more interesting to talk about than to actually carry out and accomplish. They usually just become words that hold no depth as we use them as a way for people to be impressed with us. For example, you can have a guy who would tell everyone that he was going to backpacking through Europe because that was a goal of his and of course he proclaimed this everywhere he went, but it remained a proclamation because the ooh's and ahhh's he received seemed to be just as satisfying as backpacking around Europe, which made him never take the steps to make his goal a reality until it vanished all together. So many dreams and goals become lost as we sit and wait for life to hand them over to us on a silver platter. Life isn't handing out golden tickets. It actually seems to be doing the opposite as it tries to get in the way of us getting what we want and this is where we have to take a stand and put a plan into play so that our goals just become something we can cross off the list because we've been there and done that, and we're ready for the next challenge. In order to live the lives we want and have the futures that we so sweetly dream about at night, we have to take that dangerously rough first step on the journey to get where we need to go. I'm going to use traveling as our example for getting what we want because who doesn't want to travel? If you want to travel to some beautiful place that you've seen being re-tweeted a million times on Twitter then you need to stop and immediately make a plan that allows you to acquire the money you need for the trip as well as a plan that that allows your life to be put on hold so that you can travel to this twitter famous place. Obviously, one of the first excuses that pop up might be concerned with the fact that you have exactly 64 cents in your bank account. This is an immediate downer but all this means is that you need to find a way to boost that 64 cents to what ever the total amount of your trip may be. This is the part where all of us young people are disgusted with the thought of working but have no other choice because if we don't, we can say goodbye to our one-week getaway to that tropical paradise. But if you have no money then getting it is imperative to your goal, and you're going to have to do it somehow whether that be through working at a fast food joint or creating America's next best smart phone app, you have to do something. And once you've spent all those grueling hours working and saving for your trip, all you have to do is plan and schedule, and you've got a plane ticket to wherever your heart desires. But once again none of this is possible without putting in the hard work and time to get where we need to go. Traveling is obviously a simpler goal, but when it comes to careers and our education, then we really have to get on board with what we need to do to achieve our goals because the job or grades we want won't just appear to us if we wait around and go through life's motions. We have to get up and put in the necessary work for every single thing we want in life because if we don't we're never going to get where we want, and we'll just be left sitting in a stinking pile of regret. Do yourself a favor and work hard for whatever you want and start as soon as possible. Get a head start on your dreams because if you start early, your dreams will present themselves sooner than they would if you sat around. Don't sit in a stinking pile of regret, have a dream or goal and immediately do everything you can to make it happen.

New year, new semester, not the same old thing. This semester will be a semester to redeem all the mistakes made in the previous five months.

1. I will wake up (sorta) on time for class.

Let's face it, last semester you woke up with enough time to brush your teeth and get to class and even then you were about 10 minutes late and rollin' in with some pretty unfortunate bed head. This semester we will set our alarms, wake up with time to get ready, and get to class on time!

And so it begins.

1. Walk in motivated and ready to rock

Camping out at the library is not for the faint of heart. You need to go in as a warrior. You usually have brought supplies (laptop, chargers, and textbooks) and sustenance (water, snacks, and blanket/sweatpants) since the battle will be for an undetermined length of time. Perhaps it is one assignment or perhaps it's four. You are motivated and prepared; you don’t doubt the assignment(s) will take time, but you know it couldn’t be that long.
