As a child, one of the important things you get asked in kindergarten is what are you going to be when you grow up? However, many of the things we announced that we were going to be when we grew up we either realized were unrealistic or our interests shifted into something different than when we were 6. I for sure know that when I was 6, the last response that would have uttered out of my mouth was that I wanted to be an accountant. I'm pretty sure at that age, I didn't even know what an accountant was.
Now let's fast forward to today, yes I'm pretty sure what I want to be, but there are so many parts of being an adult that nobody tells you until it's too late. You're in the adult world and you have to put on your big girl/boy pants and make hard decisions. It's not as simple as what you'll have for breakfast or what you'll wear that day, but you have to make decisions that will affect you for the rest of your life.
The first major decision you have to make is whether you will even go to college and to do this you have to do everything just right in high school. You have to maintain that solid 3.0 GPA AT LEAST, do all of the extracurriculars, and get that stellar ACT score. Once you make it into your college of choice you better know what major you want or figure it out real quick because you're not paying $4000 a semester to goof around.
Then after you go to college you have to choose whether you get a job or just get loans to pay for your education, then if you get a job where are you going to work? I picked the choice with no debt and I'm hoping it was worth it over all the sleep I've lost trying to juggle work and coursework at the same time. Which leads me to my main point, we make all these little decisions and we dwell and panic because ultimately these are the choices and consequences we will have to deal with the rest of our lives.
The thing is though is that most people can't see that far into the future, I'm pretty sure it's something our brain has developed to keep us all from going crazy. If we lived every day based on the effects of that one choice 20 years from now, we would be making entirely different choices. If I knew exactly where I was going in my career, I probably wouldn't have the drive I have right now because I would know that everything was going to be okay, but a little stress and panic in our life is okay.
If it comes to where you are stressed out all the time, you probably need to evaluate your day to day decisions and discover the root of your stress, but I know I'm not really living unless I'm worried about the future. So yeah I may make some decisions that will bite me in the end later, but for now I'm doing the best with the information I currently know.
