Your major in college is most likely going to determine what you do for the rest of your life. If you're a nursing major you will most likely be a nurse. If you are an education major, you will most likely be a teacher, so on and so forth. My major is hospitality management, that doesn't mean I am going to manage a hospital. Hospitality management is an underrated major that not many people know about. One of the great things about hospitality management is that I am not limited to one type of job.
Hospitality management is part of the hospitality industry-- sometimes you will see it as "hospitality and tourism industry," but it is all one industry. This industry covers most of the businesses that focus on customer satisfaction. This includes restaurants, hotels, casinos, cruises, country clubs, event planning, amusement parks, and surprisingly more. Because of all the different segments of this industry, hospitality students are not limited to one area. Hospitality students also rarely struggle to find a job because there are so many different segments of this industry. This is also a booming industry, so this career will also be looking to hire people.
Hospitality management is an industry that focuses on hiring people who know how to make a customer happy and have an enjoyable attitude while doing so. But this also includes working long nights or early morning, holidays, and times you would rather be home with family or out with friends. Luckily, you don't need to have a hospitality degree to work in one of the segments of this industry. Although, having a hospitality degree will help you advance within a company or segment of the industry. Be prepared to work hard, though. Everyone thinks that hospitality is a really easy major, but there is a lot of work that goes into it as well; especially long nights and early mornings.
So the next time you are at a restaurant, hotel, or anywhere else that is part of the hospitality industry; think about all the work that goes behind it. And don't bother asking if we work at a hospital, get to know what we are doing. Most of the time we will have some interesting stories to tell you.
