"If you're walking down the right path and you're willing to keep walking, eventually you'll make progress." Barack Obama
I'm going to start this article with a simple sentence. I dislike Donald Trump. However, just because I dislike him doesn't mean I want him to fail when he gets in office. I hope for all of us that he makes a good President of the United States. Because, point blank, if he fails, we fail.
Just because I hope he doesn't fail doesn't mean I support his actions, both proposed and already done throughout the Election process. I do not like the hatred he has spread. Nor do I like the absolute intolerance that he has shown. He's got a monumental temper and he's a manipulative person.
He's had multiple accusations of Sexual Assault, and if you follow up that point with "But" then we cannot be friends. Nothing in the world excuses that kind of behavior. Nothing excuses grabbing people inappropriately. I don't care if it happened years ago or last night, nothing gives anyone the right to inappropriately touch another person. He's enticed violence at his rallies and even claimed that he would pay the legal fees of people that commit assault on other people just because they have a differing opinion.
He wants to build a wall but he doesn't want to pay for it. This wall would separate many families. Yes, they may have come to the US illegally, but they did so for a better life and I think that should mean something. He wants to cut off refugees and keep them in a war-torn country because they "could be" terrorists. "Give me your tired, your poor, your huddled masses yearning to breathe free, the wretched refuse of your teeming shore. Send these, the homeless, tempest-tossed to me, I lift my lamp beside the golden door!" This is the quote that appears on the Statue of Liberty, and I think that should still mean something.
Then we've got his running mate. Pence is going to be the new VP and I'm going to be sad to see Biden go. My main problem with Pence is that he wants to take money away from HIV research and funnel it into conversion therapy. Conversion Therapy is a really nice way to say "being tortured until you hate yourself." Don't believe me? Do some research. Ask google to find you some first-hand stories from LGBT teens that have survived this "treatment". That's correct ladies and gents, I used the term survived because it's estimated that 50% of the teens forced into these programs commit suicide before it's over because they are literally taught to hate who they are.
I will concede that Donald Trump will soon be the President of the United States. I will not bow to fear and hatred. I will not be taught to hate my LGBT brothers and sisters. I will not be taught to hate someone because of the color of their skin. I will not be taught to fear and hate people for wearing things because of religious reasons.
I will give Donald Trump a chance. I just hope he deserves it.
