Don't Grow Up Too Fast

Don't wish away your youth.

Don't Grow Up Too Fast
Maddie Jordan

There has been so many times where I have heard to enjoy being young while it lasts and to live it up before I enter the real world. Once you graduate you’re going to get a career, get married, maybe have some kids. That equals a lot more responsibility for us young kids. And though I am very excited for that stage of my life, I am having way too much fun being this young.

I think the beauty of youth is the fact that you get to be wild and carefree. You may have some responsibilities as you grow but most of them have to do with yourself. High school is time to worry about football games and homecoming. Getting your first kiss and getting your license. Then you graduate and move to college and you work hard and study during the week but you also get to go out and have fun on the weekends. I think these times in our lives are often taken for granted. This is the time to eat Taco Bell at 2 a.m. and enjoy music festival and day parties.

When you’re young life can be so free. You will have plenty of time to have “marriage goals” and have kids. Trust me you will regret wishing away your youth when you are sitting there staring at a table full of bills. I don’t understand why people want to grow up so fast and look older. They want to act older and grow up too fast. Unfortunately, time is one thing that you can never get back. If you spend your youth wishing you were older, you will look back one day wishing you had time to be free again.

Now I don’t want people to think that youth doesn’t come with responsibilities. But most of them are to go to your part-time job to support your gas money that you waste driving around on the weekends just ‘cause you can. You spend money on things like ice cream, fast-food, and gas. As you grow you’ll start to put a little away for college (which is always a good idea).

This may seem to be a cliché article, but lately I have reflected a lot on who I am and who I used to be. And I can’t believe that it has gone by so fast. It is hard to believe that in a few short years I too will be thrown into the adult world.

So enjoy spontaneous road trips with a group of best friends, hike a mountain while you still have good health and stamina, spend your money on some silly things, go out with your friends and stay up til 1 am. You truly will never get this time of your life back.

You will never be as young as you are right now, so live in this moment.

11 Things Summer Nannies Can Relate To

As a college student, being a nanny over the summer is both enjoyable and challenging. Underneath the seemingly perfect trips to the pool or countless hours spent playing Monopoly are the obstacles that only nannies will understand. Trading in your valuable summer vacation in return for three months spent with a few children less than half your age may seem unappealing, but so many moments make it rewarding. For my fellow summer nannies out there, I know you can relate.

If it hurts now, it'll hurt again. Not because you're gullible or naive, only because you fall fast, hard, and you do it every time.

We fall each and every time with the complete and utter confidence that someone will be there to catch us. Now that person we SWORE we were never going to fall for has our hearts, and every time we see them our palms start sweating. The butterflies in our stomach start to soar and our hearts are entirely too close to bursting out of our chests.

Yes, it IS a sport. Yes, I fall all the time. No, I do not ride in jeans with a cowgirl hat on.

Growing up I have always wanted to own a horse. My grandparents own a well known equestrian facility in Georgia, so I have been riding since I was born. A bond between a person and their horse is a bond so strong that it cannot be broken. Everywhere I went I wanted to be around horses, even forcing my family to go on trail rides during vacations. Horses have been a part of my life for as long as I can remember has taught me great responsibility, as well as 14 things that all equestrians can relate to.

College is super hard. Between working, studying, and having a social life, it feels like a struggle to just keep afloat.

I understand. When you feel like your drowning and there's no way to stay afloat I understand that it feels like everyone else is doing just fine. I understand all the frustration, long nights in the library, and that feeling that you want to just throw in the towel. I understand that sometimes it's too hard to get out of bed because your brain is already filled with too much information to remember. I understand because I am also feeling pretty burnt out.

No Matter How Challenging School Gets, You Have To Put Your Health First — A Degree Won't Mean Anything If You're Dead

Some of the best advice I've ever received was from my social studies teacher in sophomore year of high school. He stated, "If you don't know it at midnight, you're not going to know it for the 8 a.m. exam, so get some sleep."

It's such a simple piece of advice, but it holds so much accuracy and it's something that the majority of college students need to hear and listen to. "All-nighters" are a commonality on college campuses in order to cram in studying for an exam that is typically the next day.
