Don't Grow Up Too Fast

Don't Grow Up Too Fast

I think being a child is so beautiful. You don't have to worry about anything but living carelessly and happily (not that you can't do this as an adult but being young is more fun). So, tell me, why is it that children want to skip their childhood and fast forward to being an adult nowadays? There is nothing sweeter than being an innocent, sweet kid. So, why does every child want to be a grownup? Yes, being older has its perks but nothing compares to being a child.

I say this, because recently I have witnessed smaller kids dress or act like they are older. Now, there is nothing wrong with being mature but if you are 12 trying to be 21, slow down. Trust me. You don't want responsibilities. Not yet.

Now that I am 20 years old, I reflect back on my childhood a lot. I miss going back-to-school shopping with my mom and picking out five new outfits for my first week of school. I miss being invited to everyone's birthday parties and eating cookie cake (cookie cake was the bomb). I miss having play dates and sleepovers with my friends. Those were the days.

As I get older, I realize that yes, those days were amazing, and I would go back to those days in a heart beat but I gotta face the music. I am getting older. However, I will always have a heart of a 5-year-old. Sometimes, I am told I'm immature and I need to grow up but how boring would life be if you didn't have a little fun acting like a kid. I mean, come on, I get mistaken for a 12-year-old all the time. But that might have to do with my height. Regardless, I will never stop being youthful with a free spirit because life is better that way.

I want to make sure children know to enjoy their childhood. Don't try and grow up too fast because once you are old, you'll wish you were little again. Enjoy your nights of sleep, enjoy barely having any homework, enjoy riding your Razor scooter (I think the new thing is hover boards, though) and enjoy your life as a kid.

You'll be 21 one day. You'll be able to stay out without a curfew. You'll be able to have a boyfriend. You'll be able to sleep over your friend's house without asking permission. You'll be able to drive a car. But for now, just be 12 and enjoy that you are able to live a happy life with no bills.

And once you are old enough one day, remember to be responsible but also, to remain youthful.

"That's what makes it so right. Your eyes—your soul is there, but the rest of you is still so undefined. That's the beauty of childhood. The eyes show everything you've seen so far, but the rest of you is still open to possibility, to whatever you might become."

Taylor Swift in orange dress playing a moss-covered piano on stage with bright lights.

A three-and-a-half-hour runtime. Nine Eras. Eleven outfit changes. Three surprise songs. Zero breaks. One unforgettable evening. In the past century, no other performer has put on an electric performance quite like Taylor Swift, surpassing her fans ‘wildest dreams’. It is the reason supporters keep coming back to her shows each year. Days later, I’m still in awe of the spectacle ‘Miss Americana’ puts on every few days in a new city. And, like one of Taylor’s exes, has me smiling as I reminisce about the memories of the night we spent together.

Today I started my third week of college at Minnesota State Moorhead. I have survived welcome week, finding my classes on the first day, and being an awkward loner in the dining hall. Even though I have yet to be here for a month, I have already experienced many thoughts and problems that only a new college student can relate to.

"Make sure to get involved when you're in college!"

We've all heard some variation of this phrase, whether it came from parents, other family members, friends, RAs, or college-related articles. And, like many clichés, it's true for the most part. Getting involved during your college years can help you make friends, build your resume, and feel connected to your campus. However, these commitments can get stressful if you're dealing with personal issues, need to work, or aren't sure how to balance classes and everything else going on during the semester.

In college, one of the essential things to have is friends. Yes, textbooks, a laptop, and other school supplies are important but friends are essential. Friends are that support system everybody needs. The more friends you have the better the support system you have. But you also have someone to share experiences with. And don’t settle for just one or two friends because 8 out of 10 times they are busy and you are studying all alone. Or they have other friend groups that do not include you. Don’t settle for just one or two friends; make as many friends as you can. After the first couple of weeks of college, most friend groups are set and you may be without friends.

For a moment your world is spinning. The phone alarm has just scared you awake and you’re flooded by daunting thoughts of the day ahead. You have three assignments due and little time to work on them because of your job. You’re running late because you’ve hit snooze one to many times after yesterday’s long hours. You dizzily reach for a hoodie, craving its comfort, and rush for a speedy exit, praying you will have time to pick up coffee. Does this sound familiar?
