In the last few weeks, the Internet has been buzzing over the hashtag #GiveElsaAGirlfriend. With a "Frozen" sequel in the works, many fans have expressed their hopes that the films heroine, Elsa would finally find her true love by having a girlfriend.
If you recall the ending of the film, Elsa is able to control her ice powers through the almighty force of love. But it's a pure love for her sister, Anna, that saves the day. A refreshing twist for Disney, right? Although her little sister Anna does find her true love at the end of the film, Elsa concludes her own story single and independent.
The underlying theme of Elsa's storyline is the notion of being able to be true to oneself and not have to hide who they really are from the world. This is clearly expressed in her hit song "Let it Go." Many fans and members of the LGBT community have been able to find inspiration in the character as a hero who triumphs after sheltering her true self in fear of what the world would think of her. While this is great, I personally do not think that this means we need to make Elsa gay. It would be great if Disney eventually came around to representing other gay characters in their films, but Elsa is not the one.
Part of what makes Elsa so empowering is the fact that she can be a badass all on her own. She has no man or woman that she needs to lean on for the sake of being in love. Elsa teaches young girls that, support and love from family is important, young women everywhere can accomplish their goals and be their best selves without having to find it in a romantic partner.
By giving Elsa a girlfriend, she would just be reduced to the same old tired-out tale of any other princess. Her narrative would become just another princess swept off her feet, minimizing everything that her character stands for. Being independent and powerful is what makes Elsa, well, Elsa! Stripping away that independence for the sake of a love story would take away all that Disney has done to evolve their female characters.
While I am in full support of Disney showing more representation of every community in their films, Elsa should be left as she is. Her true power comes in her ability to write her own story without relying on her man or woman.
