I Don't Give A Shit About Your Beliefs

You're allowed to have your own beliefs, but so am I.

I used to be super obnoxious. I mean, I still am, but I used to be way worse. I've always been an opinionated person, developing my own beliefs and proudly posting them on all of my social media accounts. It's one of the traits about myself that I love. But I used to be a lot more suffocating with what I had to say.

Before my beliefs shifted, it used to be my way or the highway with what I thought. I used to debate with people, I used to get into arguments, I used to cut ties with friends. I used to try to get people to see that what I thought was so obviously correct and they were so clearly wrong. I used to think what I believed should be what everyone believed and that those beliefs should be backed up by Congress through laws.

I'm a lot different now. I'm still the obnoxiously opinionated person I've always been, but I've just decided that I don't give a shit about anyone else's beliefs.

The way I see it, everyone's life and beliefs are different. People were raised differently than I was, they grew up in different environments that shaped who they are. I have no right to try to say that that person is wrong if their beliefs aren't causing legitimate harm to others.

If you believe differently than me, that's completely fine. It's your life, those are your beliefs so think whatever you want. I'm not going to debate you anymore, I'm not going to fight with you. I may vehemently believe you're wrong and might tell you that, but the situation probably won't go much further. I'll give you thanks for posting your input on my Facebook post that I really didn't ask you to do, then I'll move on. I honestly just don't care enough to give a shit about your beliefs.

Whether it's religion, politics, or something else people lose their minds over, I've accepted that everyone is different and usually firmly planted in what they believe. A person who is incredibly anti-abortion won't really ever appreciate my thoughts on being pro-choice, so what's the point in arguing? The same can be said about most issues.

No one's opinions should be forced to be everyone else's, not even mine. In a nation with no official national religion, laws that are blatantly Christian shouldn't be put into effect. Your religious views aren't everyone else's, so quit trying to make it that way. That goes for every religion, too. Everything that you believe doesn't have to be what others believe.

Stop giving a shit about what others believe. Let them live their own lives so you can live yours. Over time, I've learned that there's just no point in debating some aunt I don't talk to anymore on a Facebook post. Instead, I can just work harder to rally for causes I care about and promote what I believe on my own platform. You can try to debate me, but I'm just not going to entertain it anymore. I'm too strong and opinionated to be exhausted by social media posts from people I haven't talked to since high school.

Live your life, I'm living mine. So believe whatever you want, I just don't give a shit.

Ten Truths Every Honors Student Knows
Photo by Poodar Chu on Unsplash

One of the main reasons I came to Salem State was I was offered a spot in the honors program. While it offered many benefits, scholarships and priority registration to name a few, what drew me in was the strong sense of community and close knit friendships many found. I am glad to say that that I did find these things, and so much more. I found a home made up of some of the most brilliant and most unique people I have ever met. Being in an honors program creates a college experience unlike any other and creates some universal truths that really only an honors student can fully understand.
