Even though finals are now upon us, at least we have one thing to bring light into these dark days.
The Victoria's Secret Fashion Show; The fashion show of all fashion shows. The event that's bigger, and maybe better than all of the fashion weeks combined. But as most events in modern pop culture, there are a million critics just waiting to rip apart a night of entertainment, claiming one of various social issues have poisoned the night.
Am I offended when I hear about groups of men drinking beer and watching the fashion show? Eh. I think it's a little gross, but it's not much different then drooling over Justin Bieber performing shirtless.
Over 60 percent of viewership for the show is women. Probably because most women enjoy it for the same reasons I do; it's fun to watch the outstanding costumes and gab about girl crushes. Past and future musical guests include Ed Sheeran, Taylor Swift, and Selena Gomez-- artists that my guy friends cringe at.
These women have been blessed with their looks and have chosen to strut down the runway, not oblivious to the men (and women) watching them. They have successful careers, a trait that most women aspire to obtain. And this job isn't easy. They have worked extremely hard to get where they are both career and fitness wise. The VS fashion show is not their first rodeo. If you can walk around half naked the whole night knowing there are millions of people watching, more power to you.
Unattainable goals? Maybe so. But most of this is just due to the way they are born. Someone who is five feet can'taim to be six feet with never-ending legs. Are they considered lucky for what they were born with? Yes. Does that mean that should be our end goal? No.
I'll never ever look like a Victoria's Secret model. That can't stop me from aiming for a healthier lifestyle. It's often forgotten that these girls are real people before we criticize their life choices. In a Cosmo article, angel Karlie Kloss said this:
"I don't think people realize half of the things that we do [or eat]. We are humans, we are normal — I live my life, I have a wonderful, happy, healthy life. I indulge! But I also work hard. I work out and I train and I'm very active and always healthy, but, you know ... I have a sweet tooth. It's about balance, because that's the only way to [keep your routine] sustainable. I don't diet; I'm not a fan of diets or fasts. I just do my best to stay healthy."
At the end of the day, Victoria's Secret is a business; A business with a female CEO, might I add. Broadcasting this show is a smart marketing move to increase sales right as the holiday season hits. The men in Calvin Klein ads are not what the everyday Calvin Klein customer looks like. It's not just Victoria's Secret using attractive people to drive revenue and you don't have to be a marketing major to figure that one out.
Believe it or not, women actually do wear underwear (most of the time)! So if I'm going to spend $27 for 5 pairs of panties, I want to spend it somewhere that makes me happy. It sounds really cheesy but the store, the show, and the brand just make me happy. From the free little dogs they give out to the smell of the store; it's somewhere I enjoy spending my time and money.
Honestly, if it really bothers you that much ignore it. Better yet, you already know what to expect. If girls strutting around in their bras and underwear really makes your blood boil, drink that glass of wine while watching one of the many other options available on Tuesday nights: "The Voice," "Scream Queens," and my personal guilty pleasure, "Married at First Sight."
