Don't Freak Out-- Donald Trump Is The "Presumptive Nominee"

This presidential race started way too early and has way too little substance. We don’t really know what any of the candidates’ policies include, aside from some vague remarks on certain hot-button issues. It’s this over-a-year-long media circus that allowed a celebrity-like Donald Trump to gain so much steam and roll into May with over 50% percent of the primary votes in some states. There was no room for legitimate discourse; instead, America became the set for a soap opera more dramatic than Grey’s Anatomy. After having a plethora of candidates at the beginning of the primary season, Cruz and Kasich dropped out last week leaving the Republican party with one nominee left—Donald Trump. For many people, even many Republicans, this was the worst-case scenario, the one outcome everyone wanted to avoid. But don’t freak out. God is still on the throne; He is still sovereign.

Even when it seems like our country is falling apart and the government doesn’t make any sense, we have to trust God. After all, He’s the one who made this world and, as the childhood song goes, “He’s got the whole world in His hands.” It sounds cliché because we’ve heard it so often, but we have to remember that it’s also true. Psalm 29:10 says, “The LORD sat as King at the flood; Yes, the LORD sits as King forever.” Even during the flood, when it seemed like the whole world was ending, God was still King. Even now, God is on the throne.

Sometimes it seems as if we have rounded a corner in our culture; a corner that has taken us farther from God than ever before and it seems like we, as a society, may never find our way back to God. However, as Jesus says in Matthew 19:26, “[w]ith man this is impossible, but with God all things are possible." God knows exactly what is happening in American politics. None of this has taken Him by surprise. God works all things for the good of those who love Him (Romans 8:28), and His purposes will be done. No matter what the politicians in this country plan, Proverbs 19:21 says, “Many are the plans in a person's heart, but it is the LORD's purpose that prevails.” God can and will use His children, and even non-believers, for His will.

The sovereignty of God is abundantly clear all throughout the Bible. Donald Trump is the “presumptive nominee.” The horde of other Republican candidates dropped out. Trump will likely be running against Hillary. Everything will be okay. God tells us to pray for those in authority. We should be praying for all of our government leaders—even Donald Trump. No matter what happens in politics, God is on the throne. He is sovereign. Trust Him.

New year, new semester, not the same old thing. This semester will be a semester to redeem all the mistakes made in the previous five months.

1. I will wake up (sorta) on time for class.

Let's face it, last semester you woke up with enough time to brush your teeth and get to class and even then you were about 10 minutes late and rollin' in with some pretty unfortunate bed head. This semester we will set our alarms, wake up with time to get ready, and get to class on time!

And so it begins.

1. Walk in motivated and ready to rock

Camping out at the library is not for the faint of heart. You need to go in as a warrior. You usually have brought supplies (laptop, chargers, and textbooks) and sustenance (water, snacks, and blanket/sweatpants) since the battle will be for an undetermined length of time. Perhaps it is one assignment or perhaps it's four. You are motivated and prepared; you don’t doubt the assignment(s) will take time, but you know it couldn’t be that long.

December... it's full of finals, due dates, Mariah Carey, and the holidays. It's the worst time of the year, but the best because after finals, you get to not think about classes for a month and catch up on all the sleep you lost throughout the semester. But what's worse than finals week is the last week of classes, when all the due dates you've put off can no longer be put off anymore.
