I love college…except for when there is bad weather. Rain, snow, freezing cold, or blazing hot and walking across a parking lot as far as the eye can see and plus all over a huge campus to find my classes. In high school we had two or three buildings to walk to and they were all very close together. College is a whole other story.
I don’t know about you, but I have heard from my parents, grandparents, and great-grandparents the same thing for years. They always say, “I had to walk fifteen miles (because it's always fifteen miles, don't question it) to school barefoot in the snow! Uphill both ways!” I always laugh at that, but when you are walking around campus of your college in the winter, it honestly feels like it some days!
According to the University of Central Arkansas’ there are about 350 total campus acreage. On that acreage there are 115 campus buildings and facilities with 3,231,373 building square feet maintained. Compared to my three building high school that is HUGE. I learned the hard way that I needed to be prepared for any types of weather. Arkansas’ has the strangest weather to begin with, and on top of that I wasn’t used to walking forever to get to one class.
I remember my freshman year of college I didn’t own rain boots, a rain coat, or an umbrella. That was totally fine in the past considering that I only walked 100 feet to the next building over so I never needed any of those at school. Now my best advice that I give to upcoming freshman is to make sure you have at least an umbrella in your bag at all times.
My first few weeks of school it absolutely poured. After the first day being soaked walking to class I decided it was time to get me some rainwear! It has come in handy way more than I realized it would. Some days the weather channels say it is only a 10% chance of rain, but wouldn’t it be my luck that it storms on my way from one building to another.
So to be quite truthful, walking to class when you are in college pretty much sucks, but if you are prepared for all types of weather it at least helps you out a little bit! I have honestly not missed high school at all since I graduated, but some days I do envy those high school students that aren’t soaked head to toe after walking a couple miles to class.
