Don't Forget To Count Your Blessings Once In A While

Life is so precious, yet it is very often that we tend to forget that. We are granted the opportunity to breathe, think, and speak. If you are reading this and you can confidently say that you are well and able to do all those things without difficulty, you are more than lucky. The everyday hassles of life are pretty good at distracting us from seeing just how good we have it. If you sit here and really think about it, so many people out there would love to be in your position.

I've come to realize these past few weeks that my key motive in this life should be simply to wake up every day and be happy with who I am as a person and where my life is at. I want to be doing everything in my power to have a happy heart. It sounds corny but it's just about impossible to get in the way of someone with a happy heart. People who seem as if they radiate sunshine are almost always the ones who realize how fortunate they are, and how fragile life can be, no matter how crazy it may seem at certain given times.

They say count your blessings. However, sometimes those blessings are a little foggy on certain days.

Everyone has moments where you feel like you are at the lowest of lows. There are going to be days where your heart aches for a reason that seems so important at the time that you can't help but feel sorry for yourself. Yet looking back at those days, it's hard not to laugh in slight embarrassment for how weak you probably looked to your friends and comfort crew that had to help you get out of that funk you claimed you were in. Yet, you progressed. You got past those moments and were able to no longer be engulfed by the past.

Something I have noticed about people is we like to hold onto the possibility that things can return to the way they once were. But we are always changing and developing. We are constantly meeting new people, experiencing new things, and getting thrown new curveballs every day. This forces our minds and our bodies to always be under construction in a way. We must acknowledge this and not let ourselves fall into the trap of feeling bad for yourself because of it, even though it is always the easier route to take.

Happiness is a beautiful thing. It is what keeps us going, and what fuels our ignition to want to do more. We must understand what makes us so damn happy, and do as much as we possibly can of it. Seek out what makes your heart feel extra good, and never look back. Because when you radiate happiness, you are truly a different breed of the person you were before. It helps you make the most of the cards you have been dealt, and know just how lucky you are to be on this earth, healthy and able.

Next time you feel that negativity slowing wrapping around you, reflect on how fortunate you are, and how there are plenty of other's who would love to have been so lucky to have the opportunities that you do. Chances are, someone out there has it worse than you, so we must make the best of what we have.

Today I started my third week of college at Minnesota State Moorhead. I have survived welcome week, finding my classes on the first day, and being an awkward loner in the dining hall. Even though I have yet to be here for a month, I have already experienced many thoughts and problems that only a new college student can relate to.

"Make sure to get involved when you're in college!"

We've all heard some variation of this phrase, whether it came from parents, other family members, friends, RAs, or college-related articles. And, like many clichés, it's true for the most part. Getting involved during your college years can help you make friends, build your resume, and feel connected to your campus. However, these commitments can get stressful if you're dealing with personal issues, need to work, or aren't sure how to balance classes and everything else going on during the semester.

In college, one of the essential things to have is friends. Yes, textbooks, a laptop, and other school supplies are important but friends are essential. Friends are that support system everybody needs. The more friends you have the better the support system you have. But you also have someone to share experiences with. And don’t settle for just one or two friends because 8 out of 10 times they are busy and you are studying all alone. Or they have other friend groups that do not include you. Don’t settle for just one or two friends; make as many friends as you can. After the first couple of weeks of college, most friend groups are set and you may be without friends.

For a moment your world is spinning. The phone alarm has just scared you awake and you’re flooded by daunting thoughts of the day ahead. You have three assignments due and little time to work on them because of your job. You’re running late because you’ve hit snooze one to many times after yesterday’s long hours. You dizzily reach for a hoodie, craving its comfort, and rush for a speedy exit, praying you will have time to pick up coffee. Does this sound familiar?

Finals week is upon us. It is a magical time of year during which college students everywhere flock to the library in attempt to learn a semester's worth of knowledge in only a week. For some students, it's their first time in the library all semester, maybe ever. Others have slaved away many nights under the fluorescent lights, and are slightly annoyed to find their study space being invaded by amateurs. While these newbies wander aimlessly around the first floor, hopelessly trying to find a table, the OGs of the library are already on the third floor long tables deep into their studies. Here is a few signs that you may live in the library, whether you'd like to admit it or not.
