Follow Your Heart

What to do when things get tough.

Follow Your Heart
Lindsey Rebecca Sears

We all face things from day to day that are hard to get through, whether it is relationships, family struggles, school, big decisions or even something simple, like who you want to hang out with tomorrow. When we go to someone for advice on what to do in our hard situations a lot of times they will use this short little phrase. Follow your heart. This phrase seems to give a little ounce of hope when life gets rough, but is it something that is actually helpful? People will say follow you heart, there are songs that talk about following where you heart leads, many quotes that say you should listen to your heart; it has become something that we will see on a regular basis and not even think twice about it. This is the society that we live in, and it has changed a lot in our lifetime and is only going to continue to change. From a Christian perspective you are taught to rely on God rather than worldly desires. I will tell you first hand that it sounds so much more simple than it actually is. Especially in the society that we live in! Going back to the phrase follow your heart. Is that really what we should be doing? As a Christian in the world we live in today, it is not something that we think about often. The world today says that it's OK to do basically whatever we want. When we are following our hearts we are doing the things that we desire just as society says we should. Sometimes this isn't a bad thing but if we are following the things that we want, are we following the path that God has coming our way? Sometimes they may cross, but we should make sure that we are following Him over our desires. This can be so hard at times because it is not always the thing that we would choose. Sometimes it is very hard to follow God rather than your heart because at the time you do not see the bigger picture, all you see is what you want and in the timing you think is right. Other times what God wants us to do, we are afraid to actually do, because we have been hurt in the past or something is holding us back because we are scared that it may end badly at some point. We make excuses and try to show that what we want to do is right. We have to be willing to take a leap of faith and just go for it, even if it is scary. No matter what is going on in your life right now this can apply to you. Instead of trying to see what your heart is telling you to do, pray continuously about the situation and see what God is leading you to do. In the end the outcome will be 1,000 times better. It may be hard now but things WILL get better. Be the light in your community and remember Gods plans will always be greater than our own. Instead of following your heart, let's follow God!

Proverbs 3:5-6

Trust in the lord with all of your heart and lean not on your own understanding; In all of your ways submit to him and he will make your paths straight.

Today I started my third week of college at Minnesota State Moorhead. I have survived welcome week, finding my classes on the first day, and being an awkward loner in the dining hall. Even though I have yet to be here for a month, I have already experienced many thoughts and problems that only a new college student can relate to.

"Make sure to get involved when you're in college!"

We've all heard some variation of this phrase, whether it came from parents, other family members, friends, RAs, or college-related articles. And, like many clichés, it's true for the most part. Getting involved during your college years can help you make friends, build your resume, and feel connected to your campus. However, these commitments can get stressful if you're dealing with personal issues, need to work, or aren't sure how to balance classes and everything else going on during the semester.

In college, one of the essential things to have is friends. Yes, textbooks, a laptop, and other school supplies are important but friends are essential. Friends are that support system everybody needs. The more friends you have the better the support system you have. But you also have someone to share experiences with. And don’t settle for just one or two friends because 8 out of 10 times they are busy and you are studying all alone. Or they have other friend groups that do not include you. Don’t settle for just one or two friends; make as many friends as you can. After the first couple of weeks of college, most friend groups are set and you may be without friends.

For a moment your world is spinning. The phone alarm has just scared you awake and you’re flooded by daunting thoughts of the day ahead. You have three assignments due and little time to work on them because of your job. You’re running late because you’ve hit snooze one to many times after yesterday’s long hours. You dizzily reach for a hoodie, craving its comfort, and rush for a speedy exit, praying you will have time to pick up coffee. Does this sound familiar?

Finals week is upon us. It is a magical time of year during which college students everywhere flock to the library in attempt to learn a semester's worth of knowledge in only a week. For some students, it's their first time in the library all semester, maybe ever. Others have slaved away many nights under the fluorescent lights, and are slightly annoyed to find their study space being invaded by amateurs. While these newbies wander aimlessly around the first floor, hopelessly trying to find a table, the OGs of the library are already on the third floor long tables deep into their studies.
