Don't Let Fear Control Your Life

Life's too short.

Don't Let Fear Control Your Life

In light of the recent string of terrorist attacks and violence abroad as well as here in our own country, it seems like everything from going to school to going to a night club is risky to one's safety. The paranoia has become widespread with people living in fear; second guessing decisions as simple as going to see a movie.

Recently I heard a story about a movie theater only a few minutes from my house in which during a showing of a new movie, the theater goers became panicked after hearing fireworks being shot off in a nearby neighborhood. The audience rushed to the exits of the theater before realizing their mistake. This severe show of paranoia could have resulted in the trampling of an innocent person all over a Fourth of July fireworks display.

This story is not unique. Americans have seemingly become completely distrusting of their neighbors— Muslims in particular. At my restaurant job, I had a kind Muslim couple come in to meet some friends. While I was mostly concerned about getting them a drink as they were dressed in traditional Muslim clothing and it was over ninety degrees outside, my other customers called me over to their tables to inquire about what the couple wanted. One older white woman even made a comment about them "scoping the place out." This expression of paranoia disturbed me even more than the hasty and potentially dangerous theater evacuation.

The goal of terrorists is to make civilians live in fear. By persecuting innocent Muslim-Americans who are just trying to enjoy some pizza with their friends or jumping every time a car backfires when you're out and about is only giving the terrorists what they want.

While the news makes it seem as though terrorists are hiding around every street corner waiting to brutally murder you, this just isn't the case. Staying home and only associating with people of the same faith as you will not help anything. It will only make you miserable and divide our country in its time of need.

So go to that concert, travel abroad, go out with your friends after a long day at work— you can't put your life on hold because of fear. When you see a Muslim-American, give them a smile instead of walking in the opposite direction. Believe it or not, they have it worse than you right now because of the heavy amount of discrimination and could use a bit of kindness and humanity.

There are a lot of horrible things happening in the world right now, but letting your life slip by won't do a thing except ruin your life.

Today I started my third week of college at Minnesota State Moorhead. I have survived welcome week, finding my classes on the first day, and being an awkward loner in the dining hall. Even though I have yet to be here for a month, I have already experienced many thoughts and problems that only a new college student can relate to.

"Make sure to get involved when you're in college!"

We've all heard some variation of this phrase, whether it came from parents, other family members, friends, RAs, or college-related articles. And, like many clichés, it's true for the most part. Getting involved during your college years can help you make friends, build your resume, and feel connected to your campus. However, these commitments can get stressful if you're dealing with personal issues, need to work, or aren't sure how to balance classes and everything else going on during the semester.

In college, one of the essential things to have is friends. Yes, textbooks, a laptop, and other school supplies are important but friends are essential. Friends are that support system everybody needs. The more friends you have the better the support system you have. But you also have someone to share experiences with. And don’t settle for just one or two friends because 8 out of 10 times they are busy and you are studying all alone. Or they have other friend groups that do not include you. Don’t settle for just one or two friends; make as many friends as you can. After the first couple of weeks of college, most friend groups are set and you may be without friends.

For a moment your world is spinning. The phone alarm has just scared you awake and you’re flooded by daunting thoughts of the day ahead. You have three assignments due and little time to work on them because of your job. You’re running late because you’ve hit snooze one to many times after yesterday’s long hours. Finals week is upon us. It is a magical time of year during which college students everywhere flock to the library in attempt to learn a semester's worth of knowledge in only a week. For some students, it's their first time in the library all semester, maybe ever. Others have slaved away many nights under the fluorescent lights, and are slightly annoyed to find their study space being invaded by amateurs. While these newbies wander aimlessly around the first floor, hopelessly trying to find a table, the OGs of the library are already on the third floor long tables deep into their studies.
