Think outside the box—or grave

Don’t Dig A Debt Grave This Halloween

Well, we are starting the second week of October and if you’re a Halloween lover like me, you thought about your costume well before September was even over.

They only thing scarier than a costume is how much you’re paying for it. Being a college student during Halloween is hard; you want the best, most creative, costume but you don’t want to break your bank. Let me tell you a secret, it’s possible to achieve this. Some people like to go all out for Halloween and though I would absolutely love to have the best ever costume, my college budget just can’t afford $100.00 costume.

Since I’ve been in college I’ve never spent more than $15 on my Halloween costume.

You just have to think a little outside the box. I love looking up ideas on Pinterest or anywhere online and trying to match the costume with my own clothes. Then, maybe buying an accessory or two.

In years past I have been a devil, a “frat boy”, and Louis Lane.

When I was a devil I wore a red dress I already had and bought a devil kit that included horns, a tail, and a bow for $6.00. My best friend was an angel and wore a white dress I had and angel wings and accessories she kept from years past.

When I was a frat boy I borrowed all of my boyfriend's clothes and didn’t pay a dime for my costume. I wore boxers, a button up, a hat, sunglasses, and Sperry’s. Some of my best friends joined me and surprisingly, it was so much fun dressing up as a guy.

Last year I was Lois Lane and my boyfriend was Clark Kent. I was so excited about this costume because Lois Lane is a Pulitzer-prize winning journalist so I loved dressing up as someone I look up to so much (even if she is fictional). I wore a business pencil skirt, a button-up, a blazer, glasses, and carried around a “press pass” that I spent maybe $1.00 on even making.

The biggest kept secret of them all…. Is my “dress up box”. I have everything in ther from my the devil horns and tail I wore freshmen year, to jerseys, to leis. Saving old costumes and re-using them years later can really come in handy for you and your budget.

Halloween will be here before we know it, better start thinking about how to get creative now!I’ve already planned on what I’m being this Halloween and have my costume together and I’ve only spent $12, I’m pretty excited about it too!

Today I started my third week of college at Minnesota State Moorhead. I have survived welcome week, finding my classes on the first day, and being an awkward loner in the dining hall. Even though I have yet to be here for a month, I have already experienced many thoughts and problems that only a new college student can relate to.

"Make sure to get involved when you're in college!"

We've all heard some variation of this phrase, whether it came from parents, other family members, friends, RAs, or college-related articles. And, like many clichés, it's true for the most part. Getting involved during your college years can help you make friends, build your resume, and feel connected to your campus. However, these commitments can get stressful if you're dealing with personal issues, need to work, or aren't sure how to balance classes and everything else going on during the semester.

In college, one of the essential things to have is friends. Yes, textbooks, a laptop, and other school supplies are important but friends are essential. Friends are that support system everybody needs. The more friends you have the better the support system you have. But you also have someone to share experiences with. And don’t settle for just one or two friends because 8 out of 10 times they are busy and you are studying all alone. Or they have other friend groups that do not include you. Don’t settle for just one or two friends; make as many friends as you can. After the first couple of weeks of college, most friend groups are set and you may be without friends.

For a moment your world is spinning. The phone alarm has just scared you awake and you’re flooded by daunting thoughts of the day ahead. You have three assignments due and little time to work on them because of your job. You’re running late because you’ve hit snooze one to many times after yesterday’s long hours. You dizzily reach for a hoodie, craving its comfort, and rush for a speedy exit, praying you will have time to pick up coffee. Does this sound familiar?

Finals week is upon us. It is a magical time of year during which college students everywhere flock to the library in attempt to learn a semester's worth of knowledge in only a week. For some students, it's their first time in the library all semester, maybe ever. Others have slaved away many nights under the fluorescent lights, and are slightly annoyed to find their study space being invaded by amateurs. While these newbies wander aimlessly around the first floor, hopelessly trying to find a table, the OGs of the library are already on the third floor long tables deep into their studies. Here is a few signs that you may live in the library, whether you'd like to admit it or not.
