There's this ongoing stigma about pit bulls. People say that they're aggressive, untrainable and will attack anyone and anything. The truth about pits is that they're wonderful dogs and they don't deserve all the negative publicity.
1. They have the sweetest smiles.
If you're ever having a bad day, just take a look at this face. How can people be afraid of a dog with a warm smile like that?
2. They are very affectionate and loving dogs.
Here, we see two sweet pit bulls posing for pictures with their favorite pals. However, the media portrays pits as being an aggressive breed. When raised by a loving home, pit bulls grow up to be affectionate companions. However, pits are hyper breeds, and due to their extreme affection, they are often overexcited by the arrival of their owners or when meeting new people. This behavior should be addressed early on so your pup doesn't make newcomers nervous.
3. They are people pleasers.
How many other dogs do you know who will let you dress them up and then pose for pictures like this? The pit is a good sport about all the silly things you want to do to it. They love you enough that they'll look like complete cheese balls for you.
Besides being strong and muscular, pits are used for illegal dog-fighting due to their desire to please their people. When they see their master cheering them on, they fight harder, because they are designed to please them. This same trait is what also makes pits so trainable. This breed just wants to make you happy; it strives to make you smile.
4. Pit bulls are loyal their families.
When you adopt a pit, you're getting a dog that will stay by your side until the day you die. Even if it means posing for some corny family photo, the pit is sure to be in the star of the shot. This is the kind of dog that is not afraid to protect if you were put in a dire situation. A pit would do anything for their owner, even if that means putting themselves in danger.
5. Pit bulls are great with kids!
Pit bulls are family-oriented dogs that just want to spread their love. Did you know that throughout the 19th and the 20th centuries, the pit was actually known as "the nanny dog?" It's a shame that we do not hold these dogs in the same esteem as people once did. Kids should always be taught how to properly interact with dogs beforehand, though, in order to ensure a safe interaction.
6. Dog attacks do happen, but they're not all caused by pit bulls.
It doesn't take a pit to cause an attack or to bite someone; any breed can be responsible for a bite or an attack. Incidents like these are due to ignorant owners who do not know how to properly train a dog, don't have the time to, or do not simply care to. All dogs deserve loving homes, and negative images are truly caused by people, not the animal.
7. Pit bulls are great cuddle buddies.
This is a dog that wants to be around you. They want to cuddle up to you and take a nap. They want to watch a movie with you on a rainy day. They want to comfort you when you're sick. Having a pit bull is more like having a large body pillow.
The sad thing about these amazing dogs is that they need our help. Shelters are filled with more pit bulls than any other dog breed. However, many cities or business-owned properties, like apartment complexes, have bans or certain restrictions on pit bulls. This makes it more difficult for people to adopt pit bulls. Pits do not deserve the image they have been given, it is up to us to save the pit bull name.
