Don't Blame My Generation

The millennials aren't the problem.

Don't Blame My Generation
Connecting with the Millennial Generation

All the time the young adults in my generation hear comments that make fun or take a jab at our generation. But, I'd like to point out: who raised us?

The older generation says "Millennials are too sensitive."

Yet, who raised us to be gentle and caring towards everyone?

They say "Millennials are cheap."

Yet, who taught us to budget and save our allowances and birthday money?

They say "Millennials are addicted to their phones."

But, who constantly needs help on technologym therefore having us learn the ins and outs of our technology to teach you?

They say "Millennials are selfish."

Yet, which generation trod us and our confidence down so much that we had to learn self love on our own?

These are things me and my fellow millennials hear every single day. The generation x-ers are the ones constantly hammering into us that our generation is the worst to come around.

This needs to stop.

Why are the millennials such a hated generation? Historically, it's been shown that change and growth from generation to generation can be good. Take a look at the free-love movement of the '70s and the view that the generation before them had. Take a look at the founding fathers of our country and the view that Great Britain had on that situation.

Every new generation has something to give. Something new that could be a good change, something to make the world better. Yet, why does the previous generation have to stop the growth in its tracks?

The ideas that the millennial generation has are not outlandish by any means. Most of us are simply saying things such as "women should be paid as much as men," "racism should not be a thing," and "transgender people are okay and valid and should be respected, just as you and I."

These aren't new or mind-blowing ideas. These are just simple ways to make us all coexist in harmony as best as we can.

Our ideals and our society cannot stay the way it is. It cannot stay stagnantly unfair and bias. As a society, we must take our ideals and grow them. That's all the millennials want. We merely want the older generations to see that we're trying to better ourselves and our world. The older generation doesn't understand that we are the ones that are going to have to live in the economy and society they created, regardless if it's good or bad.

By no means does this mean I, personally, hate the generation that raised me. That's not what I'm saying. I love my parents. I love my grandparents. I get they were raised in a different era. However, the one thing- the only thing- I want is for them to listen. I want them to listen to me. Because, like I said, I'm the one who has to live in this world once they're gone. I just want to make it better than it was before.

To the older generations, please, work with the millennials. We are not the cause of any problems - we usually want to fix them. We don't want to take away your rights, we want to give others the same rights.

Seeds cannot grow without water. The generation who raised us is the water, we are the flowers just trying to make this world and the future a little brighter and better.

Today I started my third week of college at Minnesota State Moorhead. I have survived welcome week, finding my classes on the first day, and being an awkward loner in the dining hall. Even though I have yet to be here for a month, I have already experienced many thoughts and problems that only a new college student can relate to.

"Make sure to get involved when you're in college!"

We've all heard some variation of this phrase, whether it came from parents, other family members, friends, RAs, or college-related articles. And, like many clichés, it's true for the most part. Getting involved during your college years can help you make friends, build your resume, and feel connected to your campus. However, these commitments can get stressful if you're dealing with personal issues, need to work, or aren't sure how to balance classes and everything else going on during the semester.

In college, one of the essential things to have is friends. Yes, textbooks, a laptop, and other school supplies are important but friends are essential. Friends are that support system everybody needs. The more friends you have the better the support system you have. But you also have someone to share experiences with. And don’t settle for just one or two friends because 8 out of 10 times they are busy and you are studying all alone. Or they have other friend groups that do not include you. Don’t settle for just one or two friends; make as many friends as you can. After the first couple of weeks of college, most friend groups are set and you may be without friends.

For a moment your world is spinning. The phone alarm has just scared you awake and you’re flooded by daunting thoughts of the day ahead. You have three assignments due and little time to work on them because of your job. You’re running late because you’ve hit snooze one to many times after yesterday’s long hours. You dizzily reach for a hoodie, craving its comfort, and rush for a speedy exit, praying you will have time to pick up coffee. Does this sound familiar?

Finals week is upon us. It is a magical time of year during which college students everywhere flock to the library in attempt to learn a semester's worth of knowledge in only a week. For some students, it's their first time in the library all semester, maybe ever. Others have slaved away many nights under the fluorescent lights, and are slightly annoyed to find their study space being invaded by amateurs. While these newbies wander aimlessly around the first floor, hopelessly trying to find a table, the OGs of the library are already on the third floor long tables deep into their studies. Here is a few signs that you may live in the library, whether you'd like to admit it or not.
