On Saturday, June 3, I had the pleasure of going to the Mann Family Tour in Durham, NC. The show was fantastic, and Tamela Mann sounds just as amazing live if not more so than on a studio track. Something did surprise me during her performance, though. She mentioned that before she went solo, she was afraid she wouldn't be good enough.
I'm just gonna leave this video here so you can understand my shock a little more.
You heard that, right? She thought she wouldn't have been good enough on her own. When I heard that at the concert, my first thought was, "Have you ever heard yourself?!" I mean, the woman is a powerhouse. She's been blessed with an incredible voice; yet, she was terrified that she wouldn't be good enough to go solo.
Then a thought occurred to me: why are we so afraid of ourselves? All of us have unique abilities, but we compare our uniqueness with someone else's and feel discouraged when we don't match or surpass them. Why do we think that because we're not like someone else that we can't shine and leave our mark on this world?
Seriously, why is that?
Is it because we fear we'll fail? Well, we will at times, but not always. As the saying goes, you win some, you lose some. We're not truly living unless we take a chance on our dreams and risk falling on our face in the process.
All of us were born unique. Although our skills may be similar to someone else's, our individuality is what makes our gifts special. Millions of people have left a legacy behind by staying true to themselves. Why don't we think we can do the same?
We were born with unique gifts and talents. There's no one who can do what we can in the exact same manner. All of us impact the lives of others in some way, and we improve our world when we use our talents to better ourselves and those around us.
Guys, don't be afraid to be yourself. Whatever your talent is, share it. Own it. Its yours. You were born to make a difference. You were "born to make history." Why not start the change today?
