Don't Ask Me About College

Honestly, I couldn't even tell you what I really think since I'm already thinking about 17 other things.

Don't Ask Me About College
Morgan Pertzborn

I can honestly tell you that a part of me dreads family get-togethers ever since college started. Thanksgiving, winter holidays, family reunions, it’s all the same. A smile, a hug, and “Hey! Haven’t seen you in a while,” (Like we’d see each other more if I wasn’t away at college? Don’t get me wrong, I LOVE my whole family, but we’re not much for planning things often. There’s too many for us to fit in an actual house anyways. Sure, I might see some people more than others, but we RARELY all have the same schedule for everyone to get together), “How’s ---“

STOP RIGHT THERE!

I know you’re going to ask me, “How’s College?”

DON’T ASK ME.

My response, along with every other college kid ever will be the same.

“Good.”

If you really want to know, check my Facebook. I’m the president of two on-campus organizations, I have a job, I’m taking a full 18 credits, I’m minoring in three very diverse topics, I’m the captain of an intramural cornhole team, I’m a part of Greek Life, and I write for the Odyssey. I mean, it’s cool and all, all of it, but I’m more busy than I’ve ever been in my whole life, I’m stressed to the max, and I can’t make plans unless they’re scheduled two days in advance. And I want more to do.

Call me crazy, but I’m a college kid.

Not everyone has the same experience, but I can assure you we are all busy with our own chaotic schedules. He has sports, she has two biology labs, they have a performing arts festival, et cetera. And we all share the same love-hate relationship with our lives as the next person. We’re just a bunch of anxiety-driven college students.

Call us crazy, but we actually do enjoy the college life sometimes.

Between the academic stress, contemplation between the choices surrounding career paths, and sleep, there’s some fun. I mean, college parties are no lie and no one can deny that. Even if there’s no drugs, alcohol, or a house full of people, it’s kind of a party getting your best friends together to eat pizza and read your textbooks together, right?

So yeah, college is going. I can’t promise you it’s going that well, but we give the same answer for “How’s your day going?”

It’s good.

So, to my family and friends, I love you all – never forget that – but I’m too preoccupied with scheduling my whole life in my head to say more than what I do. So next time you think about asking me, “How’s college been this year?” just know it’s alright and I’m alright and soon I’ll be done and then I’ll tell you how it’s really going.

Sincerely,

Every College Kid I Know

Today I started my third week of college at Minnesota State Moorhead. I have survived welcome week, finding my classes on the first day, and being an awkward loner in the dining hall. Even though I have yet to be here for a month, I have already experienced many thoughts and problems that only a new college student can relate to.

"Make sure to get involved when you're in college!"

We've all heard some variation of this phrase, whether it came from parents, other family members, friends, RAs, or college-related articles. And, like many clichés, it's true for the most part. Getting involved during your college years can help you make friends, build your resume, and feel connected to your campus. However, these commitments can get stressful if you're dealing with personal issues, need to work, or aren't sure how to balance classes and everything else going on during the semester.

In college, one of the essential things to have is friends. Yes, textbooks, a laptop, and other school supplies are important but friends are essential. Friends are that support system everybody needs. The more friends you have the better the support system you have. But you also have someone to share experiences with. And don’t settle for just one or two friends because 8 out of 10 times they are busy and you are studying all alone. Or they have other friend groups that do not include you. Don’t settle for just one or two friends; make as many friends as you can. After the first couple of weeks of college, most friend groups are set and you may be without friends.

For a moment your world is spinning. The phone alarm has just scared you awake and you’re flooded by daunting thoughts of the day ahead. You have three assignments due and little time to work on them because of your job. You’re running late because you’ve hit snooze one to many times after yesterday’s long hours. You dizzily reach for a hoodie, craving its comfort, and rush for a speedy exit, praying you will have time to pick up coffee. Does this sound familiar?

Finals week is upon us. It is a magical time of year during which college students everywhere flock to the library in attempt to learn a semester's worth of knowledge in only a week. For some students, it's their first time in the library all semester, maybe ever. Others have slaved away many nights under the fluorescent lights, and are slightly annoyed to find their study space being invaded by amateurs. While these newbies wander aimlessly around the first floor, hopelessly trying to find a table, the OGs of the library are already on the third floor long tables deep into their studies. Here is a few signs that you may live in the library, whether you'd like to admit it or not.
