Why Is Reading Books So Hard?

Typically when I pick up a book, you know something is up. I am either bored out of my mind, or in a mood to "better" myself. When I was a bit younger I enjoyed reading fiction books with made up creatures and mysteries, but as I got older these genres didn't interest me as much. The last book I've read was a true murder story memoir that actually had a movie to go along with it. Which made the hard task of reading 100 x better. Ever since then I have yet to read another book, and to be completely honest I think that was almost 2 years ago. It's not that I don't enjoy reading, I just can't sit still for that long to even comprehend what is going on. And I am sure there are many other people in the same place as me.

I have tried many times to "force" myself to read but I find myself reading the same paragraph over and over and over again. Short articles, stories, or even excerpts are simple for me to read. Maybe it is the thought of committing to a 300+ page book and having to finish it. Or maybe reading is simply all of my bad qualities in one, time management, commitment, and short attention span. This could very easily be the source of the problem, but who can tell?

After a while of not wanting to read a book, I decided an audio book would be a great idea. To tell the truth, it was but I never found a book I liked, and ended up going through at least 10 books that I started and did not plan on finishing. Well finally after two years I have decided to try and listen to an audio book. If you are like me and literally cannot read a book to save your life, try this. Who knows, maybe I will absolutely love books by the end of this journey and maybe you will too!

With a book, all of your attention has to be on it in order for you to actually understand, but with an audio book you can multi-task while listening. The more and more I think about it, there are SO many more pros than cons with audio books. Hopefully by next week I will be halfway through a book, the possibilities are endless.

New year, new semester, not the same old thing. This semester will be a semester to redeem all the mistakes made in the previous five months.

1. I will wake up (sorta) on time for class.

Let's face it, last semester you woke up with enough time to brush your teeth and get to class and even then you were about 10 minutes late and rollin' in with some pretty unfortunate bed head. This semester we will set our alarms, wake up with time to get ready, and get to class on time!

And so it begins.

1. Walk in motivated and ready to rock

Camping out at the library is not for the faint of heart. You need to go in as a warrior. You usually have brought supplies (laptop, chargers, and textbooks) and sustenance (water, snacks, and blanket/sweatpants) since the battle will be for an undetermined length of time. Perhaps it is one assignment or perhaps it's four. You are motivated and prepared; you don’t doubt the assignment(s) will take time, but you know it couldn’t be that long.

December... it's full of finals, due dates, Mariah Carey, and the holidays. It's the worst time of the year, but the best because after finals, you get to not think about classes for a month and catch up on all the sleep you lost throughout the semester. But what's worse than finals week is the last week of classes, when all the due dates you've put off can no longer be put off anymore.

Thanksgiving break is over and Christmas is just around the corner and that means, for most college students, one hellish thing — finals week. It's the one time of year in which the library becomes over populated and mental breakdowns are most frequent. There is no way to avoid it or a cure for the pain that it brings. I know every college student has daily thoughts throughout their day. Whether you're walking on campus or attending class, we always have thoughts running a mile a minute through our heads. We may be wondering why we even showed up to class because we'd rather be sleeping, or when the professor announces that we have a test and you have an immediate panic attack.
