There had been many rumors going on over the past few weeks that made me believe that these rumors about "The Little Mermaid" re-make were just rumors and nothing more. I was also under the impression that this casting was for an actual movie rather than a broadway show. To be quite honest, I was uninterested in this new idea until I read the news about the confirmed role for Ariel.
First of all, we live in a world where race has to be brought into almost everything. As an interracial young woman, I found the casting for this role to be unethical. Was I disappointed? Of course not. I think it's a beautiful thing to show diversity, but why tamper with things that already happened and have an iconic face? Disney has made movies like "The Princess and the Frog", "Moana" and "Mulan" to show diversity among young women. If this were the other way around where they casted a white woman as Princess Tiana, the world would go up into flames. I'm just confused as to why this recent event is getting so much attention and why so many people care about it. I'm tired of reading racist posts about Ariel being black, black people praising the idea that Ariel is black, and that no one has truly spoken out about why they chose to do this.
The reason I bring my own ethnicity into this is because I'm here to say I don't give a shit about who plays Ariel and I'm half black. It has nothing to do with race, but most people like to turn it into that. I just think it's safe to say that things shouldn't be tampered with. We've come a long way with showing each ethnicity in Disney movies, so why piss people off and back-track when we've already come this far?
With that being said, I wish Halle Bailey the best of luck with this amazing opportunity to play Ariel and to keep her strong through this entire process.
